On June 2nd AB 1998, a California bill that would ban plastic bags, passed with a 42-27 vote in the state Assembly!
The bill passed out of Assembly Appropriations Committee on May 28 with a 11-5 vote, passed out of assembly Natural Resources Committee on April 12 and was introduced Feb 18.
A big thank you to each individual and organization that sent letters, made phone calls and submitted emails in support of this bill. A special thank you to Environment California for their minute by minute updates on Facebook while the bill was being voted on!
While this is a HUGE victory the fight is not over. A spokesman for Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said the Republican governor supports a plastic bag ban however the bill still needs Senate approval. If this bill is signed into law, California will be the first state to implement a state-wide ban! Next stop the state Senate!
