How Small Businesses Can Reach Mom’s Wallet

On September 4, 2011, in rugs, by Luke Judge

While the slow economy has hurt sales at many small businesses, it’s also opened an opportunity: Consumers are more price-conscious and more willing to try new products, says Stacy DeBroff, the 50-year-old chief executive officer of Boston marketing agency Mom Central Consulting. although women in general are currently reluctant to spend, they are also less loyal to brands than they used to be, says DeBroff, whose company surveyed 900 women in its national database in July. Small businesses can lure new customers by shifting their approach to marketing, especially when trying to reach mothers who control household budgets, she says. DeBroff, who says her 25-employee company brought in $3 million in revenue in 2010, spoke recently to Smart answers columnist Karen E. Klein. Edited excerpts of their conversation follow.

Karen E. Klein: you recently surveyed 900 mothers ages 20 to 50 in your research database about their attitudes on spending and brand loyalty. What did you find?

Stacy DeBroff: now more than ever, it’s not easy to motivate moms to buy. Women control the vast majority of spending in this country and they’re cautious right now. the economic crisis has set up a bit of a Depression-era mentality in many households.

But we did find an interesting trend for small business: People are less loyal about the companies to which they take their business. only 35 percent said they are sticking with the brands they used before.

Did they explain why?

The recession really hit everybody, including middle- and upper-middle-class pocketbooks. in the past, if you could afford to buy a branded item, you’d do it. there used to be Tide families, or Colgate families. now we see that even people who can afford expensive brands are more willing to shift to less-expensive or generic brands, especially when it comes to items that they’re less concerned about trusting. So, for instance, the women we surveyed wouldn’t move to generic baby formula, but they might try a store-brand diaper.

How does that attitude help small businesses gain traction?

When they’re not so concerned about cost, people generally turn to big business. So if they need their rugs cleaned, moms who could afford it would just call Sears. now, if they’re looking to save money, they might be willing to try a small carpet-cleaning service. in our survey, 78 percent said they would gladly try a new product or service if they had a coupon. and if they give it a try and they like it, they might shift to it permanently.

Is discount pricing the key for smaller companies, when it comes to getting people to try them out?

Women today are really tuning out traditional advertising, like print ads and direct mail, and they’re turning instead to sampling, trials, and coupons. I think a key is having something you can offer that is socially conscious or has another attribute that moms value, like maybe a food product that is all-natural.

How do smaller retailers and service providers get the word out about their advantages if they’re no longer getting effective results from traditional marketing and advertising?

This gets back to the importance of peer-to-peer advocates via social media. every small business has people who buy their stuff and love it—they’re your existing customers. Figure out which of them are online and which are influential online. Do they blog? Do they have a Facebook presence? are they on Twitter? Get them to spread the word about your company and in exchange give them something—maybe a discount on their next purchase and a discount for every friend they send into your store.

Rays-Yankees rained out, no makeup date set

On August 20, 2011, in face Powder, by Luke Judge

“It doesn’t matter to me whether it’s the Yankees, the Red Sox,” Shieldssaid. “I go out there to pitch my game.”

Shields (11-9) has started 18 times against each AL East rival. he is 4-10with a 4.25 ERA lifetime against the Yankees and is 6-10 with a 4.95 ERA againstthe Red Sox.

The game was called two hours before it was supposed to begin. Steady rainstarted in new York overnight and was forecast to continue all day.

No makeup date was announced. the Rays return to Yankee Stadium for threegames Sept. 20-22, with the final date a rescheduled game from a rainout July 8.

A day-night doubleheader during one of those three days is likely. for theRays, trying to catch the Red Sox and Yankees in the race for a playoff spot, that would mean a hectic last week—Tampa Bay would play new York in seven ofits final 10 days.

“It makes September a little more crucial,” Shields said.

The Rays will skip Wade Davis(notes), who was scheduled to start Tuesday afternoonin Boston. Shields will pitch in his place, with Jeff Niemann(notes) starting the nightgame and David Price(notes) working Wednesday afternoon.

“we don’t want to skip Price or Shields,” Rays manager Joe Maddon said.

Maddon is no fan of day-night doubleheaders. he also said the two straightdays off weren’t overly welcome.

“I don’t need a doubleheader,” he said. “you don’t need all that extratime now.”

The Yankees plan to push their rotation back by a day. that means A.J.Burnett(notes), winless in his last seven starts, will pitch Monday night in KansasCity. Rookie Ivan Nova(notes) will go Tuesday night, followed by Bartolo Colon(notes).

Freddy Garcia(notes) was previously scheduled to start Sunday against Tampa Bay,but had been scratched earlier after he cut a finger in a kitchen accident.

Yankees manager Joe Girardi said he hoped Garcia would be able to start nextweekend in Minnesota.

“I don’t think it’s that serious,” Girardi said.

NOTES: Ben Zobrist(notes) and some of the Rays took swings in the indoor battingcage, while a couple other Tampa Bay players threw on the field in the rain.Shields and Price watched the Little League playoffs on television and gushedover a great catch in the outfield. the Rays planned to take an afternoon trainto Boston, a three-hour trip. “never done it before,” Shields said. “Lookingforward to it.” … Burnett is 0-3 with a 6.00 ERA since beating Milwaukee onJune 29.

How to Avoid Damage When Hitting a Pothole

On August 18, 2011, in caving & Potholing, by Luke Judge

The extensive delays at last weekend’s Daytona 500 stand as an abrupt reminder that pothole season is just around the corner. To avoid considerable repair costs, it is crucial to know how to drive through potholes and how to best react after doing so.

If you are driving at a fast enough speed where you cannot avoid hitting a pothole, there are a few things that you should do before impact to save your car from unnecessary damage.

Although it may sound simple, the best thing that you can do before hitting a pothole is slow down. Many drivers subscribe to the theory that one can avoid a pothole by flying over it with great speed, but unfortunately the laws of gravity rarely allow this theory to come into play.

After slowing your vehicle as best as you can, make sure to take your foot off of the brake before impact.

That will increase the damage severely, said Larry Rubenstein, owner of Route 1 Auto Service in Peabody, Massachusetts, quoted by the Boston.com. now, in addition to the wall stopping the wheel, your brakes are stopping it, too. You’re just going to have to ride the pothole out.

Also, to avoid losing control of your vehicle, be certain to tightly hold the steering wheel with two hands before entering a pothole.

Hitting a pothole when you’ve got a loose grip on the wheel can snap the wheel left or right, and your car into another car, or off the road, says Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council, quoted by AOL Autos.

Meanwhile, after hitting a pothole, it is important to do a quick quality check of your vehicle’s major systems. If your car is pulling in one direction or the other, you may have an alignment problem, a common occurrence after a violent impact.

Also, if you feel a loss of control, if you feel the car bottoming out or bouncing excessively on rough roads, those are indicators that the steering and suspension may have been damaged, adds White.

If your car does incur damage, contact your insurance company to see if you are covered. Local and state-maintained roads have different statutes concerning public liability.

The Peculiar Task of Packing for a Backpack Trip to Russia

On August 12, 2011, in russia Collectables, by Luke Judge

For many, the idea of backpacking through Europe is the perfect vacation. For the more adventurous, backpacking through Russia sounds a bit more compelling.

Russia is a huge country. I should know. I lived there for a year. in truth, the country is so large that describing Russians is a bit of a misnomer. the people in the far eastern city of Vladivostok are nothing like the people in the far western city of St Petersburg. It would be akin to introducing a person from San Francisco to a person from Boston. Heck, they might not understand each other

Regardless, a trip to Russia is an experience you will never forget. if you are going to be backpacking, there are some things you need to know about what to take. first and foremost, the large cities in the west such as Moscow or St Petersburg have everything you would find in your home city. the rest of the country does not, so make sure you have the basics. Let’s cover a few.

Are you ready for the ultimate tip? if you are traveling to central or eastern Russia, you are going to wish you had one thing that is nearly impossible to find. that thing? a bathtub drain stopper. I kid you not. Russians tend to take showers in the bathtub as is typical in much of Europe. You know, the bathtub fixtures include a showerhead. that being said, taking an actual bath can be a problem. one out of every two places you stay will not have a drain stopper. after a day of walking everywhere, you will want to take a bath. Make sure to bring the rubber stoppers.

An experience backpacker will only bring one pair of jeans with them on a long trip. I suggest you bring two if you are in Russia. why? they are insanely expensive in many areas of Russia. if you destroy one pair, you either pay out the nose or buy Chinese rip-offs called Levvys or some such thing. You can imagine how long they last

As you might expect, Aspirin should definitely be on your list of things to bring. a large bottle would be a good idea. Whatever you have heard about Russians drinking vodka is wrong. they drink far more. It is part of the culture and refusing to drink a toast is considered very rude. if you are going during winter, it is also necessary to relieve the throbbing elbows and knees you can get when you wipe out on ice.

Finally, bring a phrase book with you. I know this takes a lot of the adventure out of the game, but it can get you out of tight spots. You need a phrase book with the Russian equivalent written in it for whatever phrases you are trying to use. the Russian language is based on the Cyrillic alphabet, so it is really hard to wing it. a Y symbol is often pronounced as ch just to give you an idea of what you are getting into. if you get in a bind, pointing at a phrase will usually solve the problem.

If you are planning to backpack Russia, I am envious. It is a great time. Just watch the vodka consumption
