Busy Day At The Post Office

On January 16, 2012, in special Occasions Stamps, by Luke Judge

Font Size:

Monday marked what the United States Postal Service considers the busiest mailing day of the year.

The lines at the post office on new Bridge street in Jacksonville lived up to the title of the day. while the lines kept moving, there was a bit of a wait and a slightly longer line than what’s typical of a Monday.

The postmaster says in the 30-plus years he’s been with the post office, this was a heavy traffic year for them, even with customers doing some postage work online.

Postal officials say if you get your packages in the mail by Wednesday- they should arrive in time for Christmas.

Dog Figurines – To Collect, Or Not To Collect

On January 15, 2012, in original Series Collectables, by Luke Judge

We love our pets. Lots of us offer our pets the prized place on the bed or couch. Most of us buy our pets Christmas presents. many of us have a harder time watching an animal die in a Hollywood film than the main character. but is it going a bit overboard when we start collecting figurines of our pets?

I say, no. We have photographs all over the house of our loved ones, why shouldn’t we have figurines of our pets? Of course, this is easy for me to say, and perhaps it is even a little defensive. why? Because I have over a hundred dog figurines (a 101, to be exact). To any normal person, that many dog figurines may seem like an absurd amount. Of course, to any collector, it sounds like a relatively small number.

You may wonder how I got started collecting dog figurines. Well, to be quite honest, it did not start out as a collection. In fact, when my beloved soft-coated wheaton terrier, Sadie O’Grady, died, I got a terrier figurine to place upon her urn. somehow, I found it comforting to see the likeness of Sadie – even if it was in miniature.

My dogless days did not last long. I went out and brought myself home a puppy the very next week. I decided to stick within the terrier group, but I bought a miniature schnauzer, Woogie, instead of another Wheaton. One day, when I was out shopping at a garage sale, I found a dog figurine that looked almost exactly like my Woogie. Of course I had to buy it. after that day, I made a point of finding and buying any dog figurine that resembled Woogie. it was like a sort of happy pastime.

Soon, I started receiving schnauzer figurines every birthday and Christmas from my friends and family. I even received mug sets, t-shirts, pajamas, slippers, and other items, as well. after a while, people started sending me figurines representing other breeds, as well.

I started to display may dog figurines in a beautiful lit-up hatch. but they were soon cluttering it up, and I decided that I had had enough dog figurines for one lifetime. Of course, it was too late. my friends and family had already gotten too use to sending me a dog figurine or other dog paraphernalia for every holiday and birthday. it made their shopping easy.

I had never planned on starting a collection of dog figurines. Sometimes, it seems that a collection is something that other people choose for you. at least, this is how I felt. after Woogie died, though, I decided to put an end to my collection.

I thanked my friends and family for sending me so many beautiful dog figurines over the years, and then I told them to never do it again To prove my point, I took the majority of my figurines – all but my most cherished 101 – to a neighborhood yard sale. All but a few of them sold, and those I donated to charity.

With the money that I made, I went out and bought myself another puppy, Shasta Daisy. I find that a true dog lover prefers the company of her dog over that of a few figurines. I still display my 101 dog figurines in the hatch, but that is where they will remain as Shasta Daisy and I take a walk off into the sunset.

Popularity Of Department 56

On January 15, 2012, in ornaments Collectables, by Luke Judge

By admin ?collectible-figurines.info/department-56-christmas-2/

Why Is Department 56 So popular?

Department 56 is now much more then just collecting, it has become a booming industry and lifestyle for many. Department 56 is now treated similar to artwork, there are galleries, distinct styles, and there are now artists who have made a name for themselves such as Kristi Jensen Pierro and Sandra Magsamen. what has happened in recent years to transform the public view of Department 56 collecting from a “cute” hobby to a booming, respected industry?

If you ask me, the current state of the United States affairs has made a difference. ever since the economy has gone down the drain and the United States has gotten stuck in a seemingly never ending war people have seen hope in Department 56 artwork. the houses, ornaments, and murals depict hope, peace and love, what most Americans truly wish for. Sometimes it takes a series of bad events to show people what they truly have.

Another reason why Department 56 has been garnering more respect would be its recent diversification. in the past Department 56 collections featured were almost 100% Christmas related. Although it still holds true that the majority of Department 56 artwork continues to have Christmas undertones, there has been a recent push to make Halloween artwork more prominent and also make common village depictions more important.

Hopefully the rise in respect that Department 56 collectors will continue to rise, especially when you consider its relative inexpensiveness. You will be lucky to find a pair of jeans that cost fewer than 50 dollars. There is no comparison to Department 56 collecting; there are many quality ornaments and depictions that cost under 20 dollars. an entire collection of Department 56 ornaments will cost just a fraction of what a fancy big screen television will, and it will hold its value better and have much more meaning.

TAYLOR — Even before you hear Jeff Piunti’s house, you see it.Boy, do you see it.outside speakers play Christmas music, but the glow on the 7500 block of Tulane is from approximately 45,000 lights and decorations that stretch from the front yard all the way up to the roof. The lights can be seen all the way down the street, like a “You Are Here” marker for the holiday season.Piunti said he began seriously decorating seven or eight years ago and it took off from there. The first decoration was a three-piece nativity scene.“Every year, we started buying stuff, putting it together, and the display progressively grew,” he said, adding that a nearby house on Monroe used to have a big Christmas display, but the residents retired from it years ago. Many of the figurines and objects are animated — some moving in sync to the music, some not.Walking along the sidewalk or driving on the street is like a passing through a wonderland of holiday magic. Ensure the gift of health tops your list

On January 9, 2012, in belt & Headrest Pads, by Luke Judge

ONE of the trickiest things about the holiday season is tracking down the perfect gift for someone you care about.

It’s never fun to push through the chaos and commotion of the mall during its busiest month – and the stress is only exacerbated when you don’t know what you’re looking for.

Don’t forget about good health while doing your holiday shopping – your health, and that of the people you’re shopping for. Here are some gift ideas to help you help those you love take care of their bodies and their minds as the Christmas chaos winds down, and all year long.

For the body:

- Resistance bands, an exercise mat, dumbbells, or DVDs: why not help someone close to you set up a home gym? You can purchase any combination of items to fit any budget, and there’s no shortage of howto information to be found online. You could even make it a themed gift: a yoga mat, pants and beginner’s yoga DVD is one example.

- Abdometer: This amazing new core training device takes ineffective ab exercises and makes them easy, fun and effective. it fits in a small drawer or gym bag and gives a complete core workout. it has 10 levels and different modes for strengthening and toning, making it suitable for beginners and advanced athletes. the abdometer could be a helpful gift for anyone on your list and can be found at Fitness Town locations.

- a one-month gym membership: Many gyms offer a one-month trial membership, and they often offer special discounts for the New Year. For many, signing up for a membership is the hardest part – so why not take that difficult first step for someone on your Christmas list this year?

- Gymboss: If someone on your list has been using an old stopwatch to help them out at the gym, a useful and thoughtful gift would be the Gymboss Interval Timer. it can be used as a stopwatch, a countdown timer or a repeating interval timer. Basically, it helps the user plan their workout in advance by keeping it structured, controlling the intensity, and letting the person working out focus on just that – working out – instead of on pushing buttons and checking their watch.

For the mind:

- an inspiring book: everyone deserves some quiet time, especially in the weeks following the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. Since December’s festivities leave many feeling physically and mentally drained come January, it’s a great idea to encourage someone you love to take a time-out and sit back with a great book. most bookstores have entire sections dedicated to great health and fitness-related reads.

- a sun lamp: most people know that fun in the sun increases vitamin D and boosts your spirits, but not everyone knows you can get similar results from a sun lamp. Sun lamps emit the full spectrum of light you get from the sun, and using one in the winter causes an increase in vitamin D production and a reduction in stress and mild depression. These effects can help you stay happy and active through the winter months.

- an iPod with an armband: Music is a great motivator when it comes to exercise. while it’s rare to find someone without some version of an iPod or other MP3 player these days, a thoughtful accessory is an armband. an armband will eliminate the hassle of having the device unattached during a workout. or, you could go with the iPod Shuffle – it’s tiny, holds about 500 songs, and can be clipped onto clothing.

ASK THE BIRD FOLKS: A berry Christmas for birds

On January 9, 2012, in birds, by Luke Judge

Dear Bird Folks,

In an effort to have a “green,” earth-friendly Christmas, I suggested that my garden club string cranberries on our shrubs instead of power-consuming lights. however, someone in the club dismissed my idea because she said the birds would quickly eat all the cranberries. would that be a problem? do birds eat cranberries?

                                              –Cheryl, North Adams, MA

Good for you, Cheryl,

I applaud your efforts to try to save our planet with cranberries. seriously. At my store I’m always arguing against putting out more Christmas lights. Everyone there calls me “Scrooge,” but I don’t mind; it’s actually one of the nicer names they call me. while I’ve had some success at keeping the light show to a minimum at work, I’ve failed miserably at home. each year we seem to have another tree, shrub or bush with an extension cord running into it. last year it was so bad that whenever the space shuttle passed over our house the astronauts had to pull their shades down so they could sleep at night. This year it’s worse.

when I received your note about birds eating cranberries I got a chill. not only did I not know the answer to your question, but also, if birds really do eat cranberries, how long have I been missing out on this lucrative market? I live in the middle of cranberry central. Could I have been selling expensive, custom-built cranberry birdfeeders all these years and not have known it? I had to find out the answer ASAP. But how?

Since I personally don’t know any cranberry growers, I contacted Ocean Spray, the folks who invented cranberries. I called the consumer hotline, where they claimed they could answer any question about cranberries. wrong. Cassie, the very nice phone-answering lady, was clueless about this bird thing. she put me on hold three times (apparently to ask the head cranberry honcho). she finally came back and said, “I think so.” what? “I think so” just doesn’t cut it in this rock-solid, fact-filled column. I had to find a better source.

five minutes after I hung up with Cassie a customer walked in the store. he was just the guy I needed to talk to. (I swear I’m not making this up). The guy was wearing a hat that had “Bog Man” written on it. Wow! how perfect is that? with a name like Bog Man he either owned a cranberry bog or was a creepy character in a spooky movie. I had to find out which, so I yelled, “Yo, Bog Man.” he turned around and smiled. Whew! it turned out that Bog Man indeed owned a cranberry bog and wasn’t creepy at all. (Well, maybe a little.) I asked him about birds eating his berries and he shook his head and said, “Nope.” he said sometimes geese or ducks will eat the plants, but he has never seen a bird eat a single berry. Ah-ha! Wait until I tell Cassie what Bog Man had to say. her face is going to be red…like a cranberry.

It’s okay to string cranberries around your trees, Cheryl. They’ll be perfectly safe from the birds. But in this season of giving, shouldn’t we be putting out food to help birds instead of food they won’t eat? when I started writing this column I was going offer a list of wild berries that birds like to eat. then I was going to suggest that we all go out in the woods, gather branches filled with these berries, take them home and incorporate them into a large outdoor display. it would be like a holiday fruit basket for birds. then it hit me. if we collect wild berries from the woods, we could be removing an important food supply that many birds depend on. so forget that berry gathering idea. that was stupid. Instead, let’s talk about planting bushes and trees that will supply birds with fruit for years to come. Below are suggestions of colorful, native trees and shrubs that will not only brighten up your yard, but will also provided food for birds during a tough time of year.

The first tree on the list is the American holly. This tree has it all going on. it has bright evergreen leaves, beautiful red berries that robins, bluebirds and mockingbirds love and it’s American. with this one tree we can help the birds and be patriotic at the same time. Keep in mind that you’ll need both a female and a male holly tree in order to produce fruit, so don’t cheap out and only buy one. Winterberry, as the name suggests, is another good shrub for birds during the winter. Wintering catbirds and thrashers readily come for the red berries. Inkberry is a hardy bush that produces small black berries that towhees, thrushes and turkeys chow down whenever they can find them. despite its sinister name, Virginia creeper is actually a very bird friendly vine. Thirty-five bird species eat the tiny, blue berries including woodpeckers, vireos and warblers. But what’s really good about Virginia creeper is that the vines look a little like poison ivy. so it not only attracts birds, but it also helps keep the neighbors out of your yard. That’s a good plant.

Even though this talk of bird-friendly plants is helpful, let’s not forget about the most important way to attract birds to your yard is to buy birdseed, lots and lots of birdseed. after all, this is the season of giving…and shopping. so you’d better be good because you-know-who is watching this time of year. That’s right, the Bog Man could be watching and you don’t want to get him mad. You could end up with cranberries in your stocking and that’s not as much fun as it sounds.

This column is written by Mike O’Connor and the staff at the Bird Watcher’s General Store in Orleans. Original artwork is supplied by Cathy Clark.  if you have a question for the bird experts, please e-mail it to or call 508-255-6974.
