3 arrested in theft of $400,000 worth of coins

SARASOTA — Three suspects have been arrested in the burglary of a residence where a coin collection valued at $400,000 was stolen, the Sarasota Police Department reported Tuesday.

The stolen property also was recovered.

The victim reported the burglary of a residence in the 3700 block of Breezemont Drive in Sarasota on Dec. 14, a police press release said.

Items stolen included gold and silver collectible coins valued at $400,000.

Detective Maria Llovio issued a notification to retailers about the stolen gold and collectable coins.

American Coins and Collectables notified Llovio that on Dec. 15 two customers had attempted to sell a suitcase full of valuable coins. the suspects were going to verify the value of the coins at another shop and then return to make the sale.

On Dec. 17, two suspects returned to American Coin and Collectables with the same suitcase of coins to negotiate a sale. when they realized law enforcement officers had been called, they fled out the rear door, leaving the suitcase and the coins in the store.

After a brief foot pursuit, Sarasota County deputies arrested Justin Gerken and Benjamin Hilliard. the victim of the burglary identified the recovered coins as items taken during the burglary.

Gerken, 21, and Hilliard, 22, were arrested for dealing in stolen property. Gerken also was charged with grand theft and Hilliard was charged with violation of probation for a previous arrest for burglary, and resisting arrest without violence.

Jessica Striewski, 19, was arrested on Dec. 22 and charged with grand theft $100,000 or more, dealing in stolen property, and fraud-false owner information on a pawn slip.

The arrests were the result of the collaborative effort of deputies from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office and officers from the Sarasota Police Department.

Kingstree gallery exhibits black Christmas decorations

Although Christmas decorations are not out of the ordinary this time of year, Cassandra Williams Rush of Kingstree has her own unique collection.

Her collection has the standard Santas, nativity scenes and Christmas tree ornaments. There’s one difference between her collection and others, though: all of the nearly 1,000 items she has in her collection are Afrocentric.

Hundreds of black Santa Clauses, a few nativity scenes and other items dot Rush’s gallery, African-American Arts and Collectables, at 200 Hampton St. in Kingstree.

Although she’s not exactly sure when she got the bug to begin her collection, she said it goes back to a time when she realized she should be proud of who she is.

Growing up, Rush said, she was a child of the segregated South where she rarely felt like anyone’s equal. this, she said, led her to gravitate toward anything that resembled what she saw in the mirror.

“I grew up during the days of segregation and colored bathrooms and colored water fountains,” Rush said. “Once I got a full realization of myself and a full appreciation of being black … I felt really proud of my heritage and consequently, just started collecting everything I could find with a black face.”

That realization led Rush to become the holder of a vast collection of Afrocentric Christmas ornaments and decorations.

“over the years, I’ve garnered these items that I’d like to share,” she said. “this is a collection that has been going on for over 20 years. I just have a tendency to want to collect anything of or by African-Americans.”

Now, after all these years of collecting, Rush and her gallery are open for business.

Charging $5 per entry, the gallery will feature exhibits every month ranging from quilts and their manufacturing to black musicians with help from the Williamsburg County Magnet School for the Arts.

“Each month, there will be a different exhibit and they are educational,” she said.

Memorabilia shop offers horror-film items

A sports memorabilia shop in Mesa that has been serving customers for 17 years is starting to trade in its autographed pictures, helmets and baseball bats for horror movie memorabilia.

Hall of Fame Collectables, at Broadway and Lindsay roads, has started displaying horror movie masks and costumes created by makeup and special-effects artist Jay Gowey.

A decapitated bust, a wood ogre, an “astro-zombie” and other monsters standing beside the autographed pictures of sports stars like Michael Jordan, bikini-clad models and Hollywood movie stars create an almost comical juxtaposition in the shop.

“It’s a whole big different world and it’s exciting to climb into Jay’s world,” said Hall of Fame Collectables owner Mike Weber. “Of all the things I’ve done, with this I’m pumped.”

Weber and Gowey met about three months ago while Gowey was trying to find someone to sell autographs he had collected while working on movies.

Most memorabilia shops in the area deal solely with sports, and were not interested in the various autographs Gowey was looking to sell. Hall of Fame Collectables’ southernmost space has signed pictures of actors and models sprinkled about, so Weber said he would take them.

Weber also became interested in Gowey’s monster masks. He put a couple masks on eBay to see if there would be any reaction, and they sold quickly.

The mask that sold the fastest was a one of a pizza deliveryman with a knife embedded in his head. It sold in about four minutes.

“It’s a love of the horror genre,” Gowey said. “There are some people who just love gore.”

Several masks and costumes are available on eBay from $99 to $2,500.

After the success they had of posting items to eBay, Gowey and Weber decided to move some of Gowey’s monsters from his home into the shop.

That was the first step toward creating what is now called the Monster Shop at Hall of Fame Collectables. in the next several weeks, the Monster Shop will expand. So far, people have come into the store specifically for the monsters, while others came looking for sports collectables and ended up leaving with a mask, Weber said.

Gowey also is creating custom masks for customers. if someone wants a mask from any movie, he said he can make the mask for them. He is working on a mask from the 1985 horror flick “Cat’s Eye” with Drew Barrymore.

Gowey and Weber are advertising masks will be finished and shipped within two to six weeks.

“You think of all those people who like cult . . . they’re out there, and that’s who we’re appealing to,” Weber said.

While attending McClintock High School in Tempe, Gowey started to learn how to use makeup. He became friends with David Ayres, a makeup artist who worked on movies including the original “The Hills have Eyes” and “Close Encounters of the Third Kind.” Gowey would watch Ayres create monster masks and learn a little from him every time.

Gowey moved to California after high school with the intention of going into movie makeup, but he saw horror movie makeup artists struggled earning even enough money for food between movies.

Instead, he fell into location representation, working with movies in the early 1990s like “Hot Shots!” and “The Rocketeer.”

He began collecting monster masks from makeup artists.

Gowey got back into makeup effects in 2001.

He proceeded to make a dozen skin-tight rubber masks building off a head bust of “2001: a Space Odyssey” actor Keir Dullea – the only full head he had.

In the past decade, Gowey has worked on several movies as a makeup artist and has also produced and directed his own low-budget horror movie. He has also acted in a couple of movies over the years.

Now he’s excited about the store.

“I’ve never really been able to meet my fans,” Gowey said. “And apparently it’s long overdue.”

Alternatively, while waiting they can attend one or more of the four hour-long seminars with antique experts, which will be repeated throughout the day.

“The purpose of the event is to promote and highlight the museum,” says Lourdes, who does double-duty as president of the society and chairperson of the committee. “We want to change attitudes and show people that museums are not stuffy places. We also know there's a tremendous interest in antiques and collectables, as evidenced by a number of television programs, so for the fourth year we're offering our version of the Canadian Antiques Roadshow.”

In an attempt to be inclusive there will be a series of one-hour seminars offered throughout the day reflecting Aboriginal, Acadian, English and pop culture.

Pascal a. Pelletier of Klu'skap Art Gallery will speak on Aboriginal art, while Bernard LeBlanc, curator at the Musée Acadien de l'Université de Moncton, will speak on Acadian architecture between 1700 and 1800. Both of these sessions will be bilingual.

In English sessions, Peter Laroque, curator at the New Brunswick Museum since 1988, will speak on New Brunswick silver, while comic enthusiast Stephen Armstrong of Reid's Newsstand will talk about what is collectable and what is not.

These seminars are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. and will be repeated at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. everyone breaks for lunch between noon and 1 p.m.

Lourdes, who has been collecting antiques ever since she won a 19th century doll at a school fair in Chatham, is excited about the expertise of the specialized appraisers.

From the local area, she's pleased to welcome Geoffrey Bell, who once owned the Coin Cabinet and is interested in coins, medals, tokens, paper money and sports nostalgia.

Also from Moncton are Jennifer Jacobson, who studied art in France and now runs a studio and art framing shop, Geraldine McGraw, a member of the Canadian Association of Appraisers appraising china, glass and dolls, and Scott Robinson, who specializes in primitives, crockery and early pine furniture.

Meanwhile, she's very pleased to welcome appraisers from Saint John and Halifax.

Terry Kelcher of Saint John is a retired teacher who, along with his wife Irene, has been involved in the book business over the last 30 years and co-authored, with Don Collins, two books on postcards.

From Halifax there's Richard Crowther, who traces his interest in antique silver back to his father's antique dealership in England. He later founded the auction business Crowther and Brayley and has given talks on ecclesiastical silver. also from Halifax are Louis Leroux, a collector, dealer and regional “road show” advisor, who's written for the Upper Canadian Antiques Showcase magazine and Rosemary Beckett, a lifelong collector who has participated in the Canadian Antiques Roadshow.

The appraisers will suggest how much an item should be insured for, Lourdes says, and they can indicate that at an auction you “may” get a certain amount for it, but they are not there as buyers, although they can pass out business cards for further transactions.

“The emphasis is on cultural awareness, education and fun,” she says, “while supporting the Moncton Museum, as all proceeds from the event will be go to fund the museum.”

Julie Robinson Interiors at 29 Breakdown Lane offers an entire floor of antiques, such as fine furniture and unique lamps, at Julie’s Consignment Shop.

In Oak Bluffs a visit to PIKNIK Art & Apparel could reward you with a past treasure that has found a new and trendy life. Just down the way off of Dukes County Avenue is Tuckernuck Antiques, located at 79 Tuckernuck Avenue. You will find timeless pieces for the bedroom, from Ag Fair posters from years past, to their just found Early Ship Anchor. at 4 Chapman Avenue magical treasures, both old and new meet chocolates at new Moon Magick, Enchanted Chocolates & Antiques. Rounding out a sampling of antique selections in Oak Bluffs is Federal House Antiques at 142 new York Avenue.

West Tisbury offers a treasure trove for the eyes at The Granary Gallery at the Red Barn on Old County Road. Here lies a plethora of antique tools and equipment to old musical instruments just waiting to again be a home’s center of attention.
