The craft

Robinson got her start with craft shows 12 years ago, when shewas just doing crafts by request on the side.

“My mom was a crafty person,” she said. “My mom’s like, ‘Whydon’t you just make them and come with me to some shows.’ That’show it all started.”

Robinson begins by collecting antiques at auctions and then, using the creative talents she has honed over the years, uses themto make her original decor. she especially enjoys the auctionsbecause of the excitement of bidding and it’s also there that shewill begin to develop a vision of what an item could become.

Robinson works with everything from wrought iron to antiquesleds and old milk bottles.

Antique Ashtrays – The Next Great Collectable

On January 11, 2012, in spain Collectables, by Luke Judge

There is no doubt about it antique ashtrays are difficult to stumble on. The once popular decorative drawing room piece – is now hidden away – relegated to the back of the cupboard. Unlike other collectibles, smoking is no longer fashionable and the ashtray has fallen from antique grace.

What this means is they are probably one of the best buys in the collecting market. If no one wants them you get the most gorgeous selection of elegant ashtrays for a fraction of their cost.

Lets us look a little into the world of the antique ashtray.

Styles

The diversity and style of antique ashtrays ranged from simple, lead crystal bowls to elaborate and fanciful porcelain pieces – depending on what was fashionable in that era.

At one time ashtrays were small they could be carried in a ladies’ or gentleman’s purse or pocket and had covers. They were objects of art as well as practical receptacles for left over ash- a gentleman’s fashion accessory.

Other ashtrays were so large that they needed support from stands made of wrought iron. Elaborate ashtrays were often just one piece of a complete smoking set which graced coffee and living room tables in chic homes and gambling houses around Europe.

Ashtrays were created in the shape of animals or flowers, hand painted, jeweled or gold dipped. later colored glass ashtrays were popular, painted or decorated with scenes of flowers or landscape. Over time ashtrays were manufactured in every type of material; metal, ceramic or glass as long as it didn’t burn.

As society’s attitude towards smoking waivered the ashtray began to fall from grace and slowly disappeared. The ashtray that graced drawing rooms like art is no longer easily found. instead, today ashtrays are scarce and plain, if not hidden. Some fashion houses like Versace still create beautiful ashtrays but they are not common place as they were only fifty years ago.

Even in the 1920s smoking was considered fun and even chic and ashtrays were created from pewter or bronze and shaped into tall elegant statuettes for side tables or as standing ornaments while ashtrays in the 1950′s were styled in art deco fashion.

The Souvenir Antique Ashtray

The souvenir antique ashtray deserves a category of its own. now of course no longer popular it had been the tourists first purchase for those eager to remember the places they had visited with something useful and decorative. while most street bought souvenir ashtrays were less than glamorous, those taken from rooms in high class hotels made the best gifts for friends at home. Ashtrays from faraway places were more exotic like steer skull ashtrays, alligator ashtrays or frog ashtrays from around the world.

These pieces are wonderful to collect if you can find them.

Prospective Values

Ashtrays have dwindled in supply as society smokes less and less. This means ashtrays will become something of a rarity and their value will increase.

It is unlikely that one unique ashtray will give you your fortune although a rare ashtray can certainly make you sit up and take notice.

Celebrity Ashtrays

Another very profitable ashtray niche is the celebrity ashtray; ashtrays owned by the rich and famous. At the time Marlene Dietrich passed away she owned 23 ashtrays housed in her Manhattan co-op which even included souvenir ashtrays from establishments like Maxim’s in Paris. These ashtrays, worth no more than $250, got more than $3,220 when sold.

The famous cigar smoking comedian George Burns died leaving several ashtrays behind. And although they were in less than mint condition, they fetched large amounts when sold. Two of his many ashtrays valued around $450 obtained $1,380. Even his cracked and chipped glass ashtrays brought in more than $100 over the reserve of $250.

If you are looking at collecting antique ashtrays there are always rules you should follow and this is a good time to start. The best ashtrays will soon be difficult to source let alone buy, but as usual keeping your eye out for these treasures from online auctions to garage sales and yard sales could see you find great buys at low prices. keep collecting.

On January 10, 2012, in historical Collectables, by Luke Judge

Some people prefer the rewarding experience of doing a home project themselves. it used to be that doing a project one’s self meant having any number of books lying about and having to leaf through each one to find the pages that were needed. with the invention of the eBook and the technology to exploit it conveniently, all that is a thing of the past. are a cheaper alternative to traditional bound books and all that is required to take them anywhere is a laptop or a tablet. EBooks are also cheaper to publish, meaning that many more people are lending their expertise across the internet to help others get their do-it-yourself home projects done right. at the rate they are being published and converted from traditional format, the number of eBooks is skyrocketing.

If you’re looking for a gift that will please the birder in your life, you may have noticed an abundance of possibilities around the web. The online birdwatching marketplace is loaded with binoculars, bird seed, feeding supplies, books, and other collectibles for birders. if you know your bird lover well, then try to keep a mental note of the items mentioned in casual conversation, in addition to the things he or she already owns. For more ideas, visit your local bookstore or nature museum gift shop. In the meantime, here are five basic tips on finding for a birder.1.) Find out exactly what the birder enjoys most about birdwatching. These aspects of birding may include travel, group outings, feeding birds, books about birds, collectible items or bird-related clothing. Knowing what the birder likes best about his or her hobby will point you in the direction of a gift idea.2.) Select a gift that best reflects the birder’s favorite activities. Merchandise that is widely appreciated by bird hobbyists includes illustrated stationery or note cards, t-shirts, jewelry, books, periodicals, glass or porcelain bird figurines, feeders and decorative items featuring birds.3.) Buy a gift certificate to a birdwatching specialty store, museum gift shop or bookstore. serious birders typically own extensive libraries of bird-related books. a gift certificate lets the birder choose a book that he or she doesn’t already own.4.) Put together a gift basket of items that birders often use, such as bottled water, sunscreen, insect repellent, lip balm, trail snacks, bird sighting checklists, wildlife Bird Feeders refuge passes, digital camera accessories, memory cards, maps and a bird-finding trail guide.5.) purchase a gift membership to the National Audubon Society,, or a local nature museum. Just make sure that the recipient isn’t already a member, so you don’t spend money on a duplicate membership. Luckily, some serious birders neglect to join these specialized organizations, so a prepaid membership could turn out to be the perfect gift.

I go back into the house trying to convince myself that what I am hearing and seeing on the television cannot be reality. then, with a horrific detonation, Tower One plummets to the ground in a deadly nebula of smoke and ash.

Washington State’s Nisqually Delta National Wildlife Reserve has bathrooms and maps at the visitor center with bird feeders. Trails follow a dike between two rivers in a huge loop, with a shorter interior loop and some inner loops. Birding at the visitor center can spot many birds for less active birders. Spring and summer time are best with a variety of ducks, waders, eagles and other raptors as well as woodpeckers and songbirds and owls. Deer and otters and other animals are possibly spotted. Winter time birding is also good with larger duck populations but sometimes the water levels are high and parts of the trail closed. Trails are also sometimes closed during nesting season.

Add Personality to Any Room by Decorating With Your Collectibles

On December 24, 2011, in the Simpsons Collectables, by Luke Judge

The value of decorating with your collectibles can be summarized in 1 word: Personality

Collectibles are 3 dimensional snapshots of life, love and special moments. they can range from a collection of bottles and boxes, to mementos of world travels. they could include gifts from loved ones or themed items that you have gathered over the years.

Decorating with your collectibles is a way to create a visual montage of your life, as whimsical or serious as you choose it to be.

Before we get started, some clarification is in order in respect to the difference between collections and collectibles.

Collections are large, often massive gatherings of items. for example a room full of Winnie the Pooh Tigers, a hutch stuffed with porcelain fairies or a closet stacked with boxes of sports paraphernalia. these collections are not the subject of this article since they require an entirely different design strategy.

Think of your collectibles as the museum pieces of your life experiences. they act as a record or monument to a significant event, person or rite of passage experience.

Their value is not in the quantity of the items but in the individual items themselves. Few homes have collections, almost every home has collectibles.

Decorating with your collectibles starts by gathering them all into one place. A large table is the perfect surface so you can look at them from a sort of birds eye view.

Next decide on the placement location of your ensemble. this could be a hutch, bookcase, built in, wood chest, dresser – A well place horizontal surface is a perfect choice.

Once you have determined space available, now look for groupings, keeping in mind the eye prefers odd number sets over even. Even numbers are divided in half visually and unless you are looking to create a perfectly symmetrical display, odds are always better then evens in decorating.

Successfully creating decorating groups includes selective decisions based on:

Gathering Items together of various Heights

Large in the back, small pulled to the front. if all your items tend to be of similar shape and height, use simple solid or decorative box or pedestal to provide that elevation to some of your items.

Mixing and Matching.

Decorating with collectibles does not mean you need to keep everything together that is of the same period, vintage, or style. Meld the antique with the modern. Blend in found items with your higher end purchased items. Add a childhood treasure to a treasure you have recently acquired as an adult.

Add the Unexpected

Let’s say your collectibles consist of antique medicine bottles of clear shiny glass, add some cobalt blue marbles to 1 or 2 of the bottles. Or, weave a small sprig of flowering lavender around the base of your grouping. Check around the house, in the garage or outside to find these additional eye grabbing accents.

Introduce Complimentary Items

Selectively place a mirror behind an item. create a more expanded narrative by adding framed pictures directly related to your ensemble. A small lamp could add some ambiance. A few added hardbound books (always) can frame your arrangement. Add an accent wall painted in a color that highlights your collectibles.

Decorating With your Collectibles is the best way to personalize your home. No matter what these items are, big or small, silly or serious, if they have meaning to you, it’s a perfect way to accent your home.

Tips To Find Priceless Collectibles and Antiques On eBay

On December 21, 2011, in ireland Collectables, by Luke Judge

If you want to sell collectibles and antiques on eBay, then you will have to create a well- planned strategy because it is not easy. there are many sellers who quit, because they do not know where to look for more items to sell on eBay. The only seller who survives is the one, who does not run out of materials or items to sell. if you want to gain collectibles and antiques for selling then you need to run ads, hand out cards, put up signs, try networking and any other possible method to make the sellers call you. When you visit auctions, yard sales, antique malls, you can come across various dealers and collectors who are in competition with you.

You can win only if you are able to convince the sellers that their unwanted items can be converted into profit, if they sold it to you. if they call you back, you are in control. you can rely on luck as well, when you go to any yard sale. but selling on eBay is a serious business and you need to have collectibles coming on without fail. there is no point in relying completely on luck because there are others waiting to take your place. you require a system wherein the items come to you constantly. besides, there are many people who prefer selling their items online through eBay, even though Internet is full of popular websites. there are some guidelines that you can follow for success.

Developing an outstanding marketing plan is very important. Make sure that your plan is an outline of how you plan to convince the sellers. create a strategy that the seller cannot refuse to accept. it should be very effective as this is the psychology of creating a win-win situation. no seller would want to lose, so make sure to tell them that they are getting a good deal because this will bring you more business. Networking also works to a great extent. Don’t hesitate in asking people, if they have any collectibles, they would like to sell. Spread word in your community that if anyone is interested in selling collectibles, then they can contact you. another important strategy is to show off the collectibles and antiques you have. this can be done in any manner you like. People can see your collection and many can even call you to sell their collectibles. Write a letter to your local real estate agents and inform them about your interest in paying cash for unwanted antiques or collectibles.

You can get in touch with other dealers and tell them that you will buy any collectible or antique, they do not want. you can pay people to find items for you. if someone finds something for you, then don’t forget to pay that person the finders’ fee. you definitely will succeed in finding treasure troves of priceless collectibles and antiques, if you make an effort and have the patience to search for items online, on eBay.

For An Unusual Gift Choice, Choose Snow Globe Collectibles

On December 18, 2011, in plaques Collectables, by Luke Judge

Gift giving can be a panic-filled time for those who are the ones trying to select the perfect gift. if you are shopping for a family member, it can be challenging because their tastes might have changed over time, so you have to keep up to date with what they now enjoy. if you are trying to get an appropriate gift for a friend or co-worker, it can sometimes be a little harder, because you might not be aware of their hobbies and likes.

However, there is a unique gift that is sure to please everyone from young children to adults, and that is snow globes. Snow globe gifts can be humorous, especially if they are given to a gift recipient in the middle of summer who lives in a warm climate, but this can be a way for them to enjoy a wintry scene they might not have the opportunity to experience in real life.

For those who love winter sports and other cold-weather activities, snow globe collectibles can help to tide them over during the non-snowy months, and give them a pleasant reminder of favorite times all year round.

Many snow globes focus on the Christmas holiday, not unsurprisingly. Disney makes a variety of popular globes that will appeal to a wide audience, one of which is a musical globe. This device showcases thirteen of your favorite Disney cartoon characters such as Snow White, Micky and Minnie Mouse and others. the globe plays eight songs appropriate for the winter holidays, and it also has lights for additional charm. With the flip of a switch, you can turn on the snow, which comes down on this magical holiday wonderland.

Thomas Kinkade is another artist that also offers snow globe collectibles. One of his most interesting creations is a Christmas train. This train features train cars, upon which are miniature globes. Inside the globes are favorite holiday character and items, such as Santa Claus in the engine, a Christmas tree, a snowman, and other holiday home scenes. the train’s engine is also equipped to play a recording of we Wish you a Merry Christmas, adding to the fun that the complete set provides.

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer is also depicted in snow globe gifts. Most of the cherished characters from the popular holiday cartoon, including Rudolph, Santa, Hermey, Bumble, Clarice as well as Sam the Snowman are included in this wintry scene.

These and other popular snow globes can be found at fine collectibles websites.

Antiques, Collectibles, & Memorabilia – Do You Know the Difference?

On December 18, 2011, in documents Maps Collectables, by Luke Judge

The world of antiques can be confusing. What’s the difference between an antique and collectible? Aren’t collectibles and memorabilia really the same thing? in this month’s column, I’ll de-mystify these terms, so that you’ll be appropriately armed for your next antique adventure.

Basically, an antique is something old that has value because of aesthetic or historical reasons. Generally, if a piece is over 100 years old, it is considered an antique. although, I do know that some people use the 50-year mark for Canadian pieces; the rationale being that Canada is a young country relative to places such as Europe and Asia. however, I’m old fashioned and apply the 100-year definition to Canadian pieces.

A collectible is something that is less than 100 years old that has value because of aesthetic or historical reasons. this term fills the gap for valuables that aren’t quite old enough to be an antique.

One category of collectible is items with intrinsic artistic merit. a stunning Art Deco table fits into this category. it was beautiful when it was made in the 1930s, is beautiful today and will still be beautiful when it hits the 100-year old mark.

A second category is mass-produced collectibles. Beanie Babies, trading cards and Hummel figurines fit into this category. they don’t necessarily have a lot of artistic merit. but manufacturers have created desirability by producing limited editions.

Another category is items associated with particular people. for example, anything worn by the Beatles or Elvis Presley is collectible.

There is a difference between collectibles and memorabilia. Collectibles are things that are ornamental. they never served an utilitarian purpose. a piece of memorabilia served a particular purpose. Movie posters, sports programs, cameras, television sets and musical instruments are all examples of items that fall into this category. Movie posters were used to sell movies. Sports programs were used to communicate information. And, cameras, television sets and musical instruments all serve a function.
