Black Friday discounts, but no lines

On December 8, 2011, in bicycles Magazines, by Luke Judge

Such sites can help people save time and money, offering bargain-hunting tips and the best comparison deals from top retailers, analysts said, sparing consumers the trouble of surfing myriad retail sites or walking through dozens of stores.

Sucharita Mulpuru, a retail analyst with Forrester Research, wrote in an e-mail that such sites “help you preshop so you can better plan your trips … and avoid wasting time anywhere you don’t want to go.’’

Zaarly.com, launched earlier this year, was designed as a cyber bulletin board for sellers and buyers. But it has also gained traction as a shopping tool for people looking to buy a sold-out item or recruit personal shoppers. the service is free, but requires users to register.

“We create this idea of buyer commerce power, where you can literally ask for anything,’’ said Bo Fishback, chief executive of Zaarly.com, of San Francisco.

Fishback said Boston has become a growing base for the company, particularly among college students who are using the site to pick up used iPhones and iPads. “When there is a new product launch, we see requests to buy last year’s model,’’ he said. “We are constantly surprised by how people use the site.’’

Some sites offer comparison shopping for discounts. one example is NerdWallet.com, created to match people with the right credit cards. It also has information on stores and online shopping malls that provide bonus rewards. NerdWallet recently offered visitors six miles per $1 spent for folks who bought from Boston-based clothing store Karmaloop through the online American Airlines Advantage Shopping Mall.

“If you wanted to buy something from the Apple store or Best Buy, we will show all the best deals,’’ said Jacob Gibson, cofounder of two-year-old NerdWallet, which has offices in new York, San Francisco, and Sydney. “A lot of these programs will increase their bonus rewards going into the holidays.’’

Mature homebuyers searching or an affordable ranch home located in an established neighborhood surrounded by a magnificent natural landscape may want to take a long look at the Enclave at the Reserve at the Merit Club in Libertyville.

Since lowering home prices to the upper $400,000s, renewed interest has resulted in seven sales over the last seven months.

“Potential buyers are impressed with our quality construction, innovative design and construction activity when they come to tour our model,” said Jeri Szatko, director of sales and marketing for Merit Homes.

To help jumpstart sales, Merit Homes reduced prices by a whopping $100,000 without compromising their inclusions or amenities.

“Customers appreciate receiving the same exceptional construction, first class product specifications and superior finishes that have earned us our superior reputation in the industry,” said Szatko.

Since the Enclave is the newest section in an established neighborhood, buyers find advantages in purchasing a new home in a “lived-in” community. They don’t have to deal with the dust and debris so prevalent when a new neighborhood is under construction. Second, they can see how the community looks and will not encounter any surprises.

Homeowners also enjoy the resort-like setting featuring rolling hills, mature trees and scenic protected views. Some of the new homes overlook the pristine fairways of the Merit Club, an 18-hole private golf course that is ranked as one of the top 100 courses in the world.

The 17-home Enclave is part of a gated community called the Reserve at the Merit Club, which is comprised of semi-custom homes and one-acre custom homes on 100 acres of rolling land. Honored with the “Best Overall Community” award from the Home Builders Association, the community was recognized for excellence in design and construction.

Buyers can choose from five luxurious ranch plans or two two-story designs with first-floor master bedrooms. Innovative homes feature 1,800 to 3,000 square feet with two to four bedrooms and up to 3½ baths, priced from $494,900 to $625,900.

Ranch plans cater to mostly empty-nesters and young professionals who want the convenience of single-level living, mainly because it eliminates having to walk up and down stairs. even though comfort and relaxed living is their first priority, these homebuyers also want spare bedrooms for when their kids are home from college. Grandparents are interested in a home large enough to accommodate their grandkids’ frequent visits.

In addition to the benefits of one-level living, buyers are attracted to the architectural design of the ranch plans. High ceilings throughout the home and open floor plans establish a feeling of spaciousness. Kitchens, family rooms and living rooms flow into each other, making entertaining convenient, while separate bedroom areas provide privacy and personal space.

Large basements are perfect for creating a spacious recreational room for teenagers, or they can be transformed into in-law quarters with a full bath.

“When out-of-town guests remain for an extended stay, you can still maintain your privacy,” said Szatko. “Ranches are also more suitable homes when in-laws need a temporary or permanent residence.”

Szatko gives her homebuyers every opportunity to customize their homes. Buyers start with a plan, and they can change the footprint of the house and eliminate or add rooms. There is a lot of flexibility, and they can select from the same finish level as the custom home buyer.

Upgraded luxury features come standard at the Enclave. Homes include oak flooring, Kohler fixtures, maple cabinets, granite countertops, full masonry fireplace, extensive trim details, wood windows, cedar shake roofs, zoned temperature control, fire suppression systems and patios.

To visit the community, take Interstate 94 to Route 137, go west to Route 21 (Milwaukee Avenue), then north 1½ miles to entrance. Follow signs to the sales center, open Friday to Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. call (847) 680-0090, or visit merithomes.net.

How to Say Farewell to Co-Workers

On November 10, 2011, in engagement Cards, by Luke Judge

Saying farewell to co-workers is easy for some and difficult for others. Depending on how long you’ve been at the job, the associations you’ve made and your position in the company, a farewell can be as simple as a group e-mail or as complicated as a farewell speech at a gathering in your honor, but these tips can help you in any situation.

Keep It Simple: There’s no need to recount each year you’ve been with the company or explain your reasons for leaving. merely mention the fact that you’ve been offered a position somewhere else and that you’ll be leaving on a certain date. Job search details, salary negotiations or even details on your new job are not necessary in a farewell to co-workers.

Keep It Positive: Never say farewell to co-workers via a negative delivery. Don’t recount all the things wrong with the company or the boss, and never express how you can’t wait to leave. instead, touch on how you’re grateful for everyone’s friendship, for the goodbye party and farewell banner and for your time among them all. Keeping your farewell message on a positive note sets the tone for how you’ll be remembered at the company and expresses a lot about your true personality.

Keep It Personal: whether you say farewell to a co-worker in person, via e-mail or via a card, try to personalize it by pointing out something you’ve appreciated about your association with them. You could mention a successful project you worked on together or express gratitude about how your co-worker always kept the office laughing. If you’ve received a farewell gift, be sure to mention it specifically.

Keep It Open: always express the desire to stay in touch with the co-worker, even if it’s just for questions or for sending holiday cards. A written farewell can include a personal e-mail address or cell phone number, or you can write those down for the co-worker you are bidding farewell to in person. even if you don’t envision a time when you’ll actually communicate beyond your time at work, it’s always a good idea for networking purposes. You never know when giving out your contact information will benefit you professionally in some way.

With a graceful exit, your co-workers will remember you well, and you will strengthen your network for the future.

How to Purchase a Quality Professional Digital Camcorder

On October 31, 2011, in camcorder Remote Controls, by Luke Judge

You should be able to share your high quality images online, via e-mail, by disk or instantly via wireless/Bluetooth options when you purchase a professional digital camcorder. other features that come standard with a quality professional digital camcorder include zoom features, excellent sound quality and high-resolution imaging. Many of the professional-level camcorders on the market today also boast the ability to take still photos in addition to film, negating the need for two separate cameras.

Sony, Samsung, Panasonic and Canon are the most well-known and top-selling brands. you can pick from a wide variety of camcorders that capture their video in different formats with these brands of camcorders. the Mini-DV is currently the most widely used recording format. part of the reason they are so popular is that the smaller tapes they use are generally a lot cheaper than tapes used for other formats. the price of the camcorder you purchase will depend on its level of quality, and how many features it has. you should expect to budget well over $1,000 for a decent professional quality camcorder.

If you are looking for a model that is very easy and convenient to use, look into DVD style camcorders. DVD camcorders utilize either DVD-R or DVD-RW discs, and will allow you to record your video straight to a DVD disc, that way you can play it on a DVD player as soon as you finish recording. DVD-RW is a lot more expensive than Mini-DV.

While there are a lot of different choices, the best way to narrow all those options down is to make a list of what you need the camcorder to do. for example, if you want to record things from far away, a zoom feature will be required. Camcorders either have digital zoom or optical zoom, with optical zoom being the best choice of the two. Optical zoom is superior because digital zoom can decrease the resolution of the image when you zoom in to get the shot.

If budget is a concern, you should also think about any additional costs that you will incur, such as the tapes or disks required for recording on your professional digital camcorder. Optical zoom will add quite a bit to the cost of your camcorder. last of all, pick a camcorder that will be able to accommodate all the types of recording that you are intending to do. you don’t want to end up spending money for features that you’re not intending to use.

Nicolas Bourriaud: From Radical to Radicant

On October 28, 2011, in aesthetic Movement, by Luke Judge

Via e-mail, the press agent for the French consulate general in Vancouver contacted me and said Nicolas Bourriaud was coming to town. would I be interested in an interview?

I had no idea who he was. but thanks to the Internet, I quickly found out he’d published several books on contemporary art such as Relational Aesthetics and was the curator of the fourth Tate Triennial in London in 2009 . after listening to a couple of YouTube interviews, I immediately liked both his manner and what he was saying. he sounded like he was genuinely engaged and inquisitive about a world he was, and still is, trying to understand.

He was also able to talk about big ideas in ways that made them accessible and understandable.

I said yes. it was arranged that we would  meet at the Belkin Gallery at the University of B.C. About a half hour earlier he’d finished his responsibilities at a symposium on campus. he arrived wrapped in the aroma of second-hand cigarette smoke.

So what did he have to say?

In about 20 minutes, quite a lot. We sat opposite each other on a bench in the gallery. Like any journalist, I asked questions but after we started, our exchange became more of a dialogue – the exact thing he believes will characterize the century we’re living in and which is still coming into existence.

One of the books he’s written is called the Radicant. I liked the title because it immediately made me think of the replicant, the genetically modified human beings in Bladerunner, Ridley Scott’s dystopic science fiction film. I thought that he coined the term. I was wrong. he told me that it’s a word in the dictionary in many languages – from English to Spanish as well as French and Italian. it comes right after radical, a word which means a plant with a single root. Radicant is much different: it refers to a plant that sends out multiple roots while growing. Like strawberries or ivy.

“It’s a forgotten word that nobody uses,” he said. “I was interested in exploring this metaphor of the vegetable that grows its roots up and down to understand what could be a 21st century modernity.”

Like the ivy which grows by developing its relationship with the wall, the radicant grows through dialogue with her or his surroundings.

“There is no single root. you cannot say my origins are this or this. your origins are multiple. there is no final destination but just a way you’re inventing for yourself. That’s a metaphor for today’s art and the adventure of the individual in today’s complicated world.”

A word he did coin is altermodern. Following after modernism and then post-modernism in the 20th century, the altermodern describes a world without recognized centres where the links and connections between the nodes are critical.

I asked him to describe what he thought an altermodernist city might look like.

“It wouldn’t be far from Vancouver,” he said. “I would imagine an archipelago-like city of small, diverse islands interconnected one to another. I think that’s the future in some ways.

“We have to resist this idea of the global village by respecting diversity instead of smashing all singularities as might be done today by the movement of globalization. Preservation of diversity is one of the main issues – the political issue.”

Living in an altermodern era means living in a time when every single millimeter of this planet has been surveyed and measured. That means time becomes the last continent to explore.

“This planet has no more terra incognito. So what’s left? if you look at what is going on in the studios today, in the last 10 years, you will see how history is important, how the past is important, how memory is important. Why? I think, I have an intuition, that the last place to discover is time.

“Time is envisioned today as a kind of territory, I would say, that artists are exploring the same way they would explore a spatial entity.”

But he was very clear this isn’t nostalgia. there is no going back.

“That’s very important,” he said.

“This interest in the past doesn’t come from any will to come back to it. it is the will to understand the present in the light of the past. it is the knowledge of the past that makes us aware of what we’re living now and of the parallel histories that we might have lived because they have been defeated in some ways.”

Altermodernity also brings with it a much greater interest in translation. if there is no longer a hegemonic language or ethnicity, then communicating across linguistic boundaries becomes key.

“In modernist times, there was no need to translate because the general ideology was that progress would anyway erase differences. We would all reach a certain point the same level of technology and the same type of culture.

“This will, this craze to standardization is exactly what altermodern stands against. We have to invent our own modernity concerning the problems of the 21st century. this modernity to come does not have the same characteristics of the 20th century.”

Bourriaud said the only working description of art he’s found useful is that it is an activity which consists in producing relations in the world. it can be representation, a gesture, a movement – anything so long as it is powerful and meaningful. he compared art to wearing a specific kind of glasses: it gives you a way of looking at the world that can be shared with others.

“Discussion, negotiation between different points of view, that’s part of the experience art is providing,” he said.

“Many artists who are trying to translate sound into something visual, something visual into sound, text into something visual, something visual into a text. you have a system of transdisciplinary translation which to me is a very important pattern in today’s art.”

Bourriaud was in Vancouver to attend the symposium The Future of the Contemporary at the University of B.C.

Bourriaud is an independent curator and head of inspection of artistic creation for the French Ministry of Culture, Paris.

Schools commended for going green

GOTHATAONE MOENGStaff Writer

Four Gaborone schools have been commended for becoming “green” and “eco” schools, by being the first to participate in the At-Source Waste Segregation pilot project, which was officially launched last Friday at Bokamoso Junior Secondary School (JSS).

Article Tools  Comments E-mail a friendPrint the schools are Masa, Itumeleng and Boikhutso primary schools as well as Bokamoso JSS.  the schools are part of a pilot project in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD), Department of Waste Management and Pollution Control (DWMPC) as well as recyclers Collect-a-Can and Recycle It Botswana.

School heads for the four schools signed an agreement with DWMPC and recyclers to facilitate the removal of waste from the schools, and then recycle it thereafter.

Speaking at the launch of the pilot project, director of DWMPC Jimmy Opelo said the project would encourage students to “bin it, and bin it correctly.” he said it was important that waste management and environmental care-taking was taken up by students, as this will mean that they will grow up with an awareness of the need to take care of the planet.  he said this can influence them into segregating waste in their own homes.

Further, he encouraged children to only throw out what is of absolutely no use to anyone, saying everything else can be recycled and re-used. he said if the pilot project is successful in the four schools, then it will be taken to other schools in the country.

Waste is usually segregated into “dry” and “wet” waste. the importance of segregating waste is to make it easier for the recycling process, and to mitigate the hazardous effects of waste.

At the schools, waste will be segregated thus: there will be a bin each for cardboard, newspapers, white office paper, glass bottles, plastic water bottles, cans, clear and mixed plastic as well as plastic juice and milk bottles.

The objectives of the pilot project are to influence behaviour change through education at grassroots, encourage waste segregation and to promote recycling of waste.

Private sector partners and sponsors of the project are Turnstar Holdings, Sefalana, Debswana and Spar.

European Stocks Rise to Two-Month High; Alpha Bank, ASML Climb

On October 13, 2011, in pedicure Kits, by Luke Judge

October 12, 2011, 12:48 PM EDT

Oct. 12 (Bloomberg) — European stocks climbed to a two- month high as the European Commission’s Olli Rehn said the debt crisis can be resolved, outweighing earnings from Alcoa Inc. that missed estimates.

Greek banks rallied, with Alpha Bank SA and National Bank of Greece SA soaring at least 15 percent. Burberry Group Plc, the U.K.’s largest luxury-goods maker, climbed 3.5 percent as sales topped forecasts. ASML Holding NV added 6.3 percent after Europe’s biggest semiconductor-equipment maker reported income that beat projections. YIT Oyj, Finland’s largest builder, slid 4.1 percent after cutting its profit outlook.

the Stoxx Europe 600 Index rose 1.7 percent to 239.16 at the close of trading, the highest since Aug. 4. the measure has rallied 10 percent since Oct. 4 for the biggest six-day gain since January 2009. the gauge has still tumbled 18 percent from its high on Feb. 17 amid concern that the sovereign debt crisis in Europe will spread from Greece to the larger economies of Italy and Spain.

“Equity markets are still giving euro-zone leaders the benefit of the doubt in their efforts to stem the crisis,” Nicholas Spiro, managing director of Spiro Sovereign Strategy in London, wrote in an e-mail. “A greater sense of urgency should not be mistaken for measures to tackle the sovereign debt crisis head-on.”

National benchmark indexes climbed in all of the 18 western-European markets, except Iceland. Germany’s DAX advanced 2.2 percent and France’s CAC 40 increased 2.4 percent. the U.K.’s FTSE 100 gained 0.9 percent to a two-month high.

Rehn, the EU’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner, said in a prerecorded speech to a Dublin conference that the euro area is approaching a consensus on resolving the debt crisis. he said economic growth is stalling and Europe is in “a very dangerous place,” though the region can avert “calamity” by coordinating action, increasing banks’ capital and enhancing growth.

the Stoxx 600 earlier fell as much as 1 percent as political wrangling in Slovakia delayed the ratification of the euro area’s overhauled bailout fund. Slovak parties reached an agreement to approve the European Financial Stability Facility today after failing to pass the package yesterday. Foreign Minister Mikulas Dzurinda said lawmakers may vote again on the measures tomorrow.

Alcoa, the first company in the Dow Jones Industrial Average to report earnings this quarter, posted profit that trailed estimates, saying European customers “dramatically” cut orders because of economic uncertainty. the U.S. aluminum producer reported income in the third quarter excluding restructuring costs and tax benefits of 14 cents a share, missing the average estimate of 22 cents in a Bloomberg survey.

European industrial production unexpectedly rose for a second month in August as increasing output in countries from France to Portugal and Italy offset a slump in Germany.

Production in the 17-nation euro area advanced 1.2 percent from July, when it rose 1.1 percent, the EU’s statistics office said today. That’s the biggest gain since November 2010. Economists had forecast a drop of 0.8 percent, the median of 32 estimates in a Bloomberg survey showed.

Alpha Bank and National Bank of Greece soared 18 percent to 98 euro cents and 15 percent to 1.84 euros, respectively. Piraeus Bank SA rallied 14 percent to 29 euro cents.

Barclays Plc jumped 6.4 percent to 187 pence. Societe Generale SA and BNP Paribas SA, France’s biggest banks, added 6 percent to 23.16 euros and 5.7 percent to 35.35 euros.

‘Piecemeal Responses’

European Commission President Jose Barroso called for a reinforcement of crisis-hit banks, the payout of a sixth loan to Greece and a faster start for a permanent rescue fund to master Europe’s debt woes.

“Reactive and piecemeal responses to different aspects of the crisis are no longer sufficient,” Barroso said in Brussels. “we now need to get ahead of the curve.”

Burberry gained 3.5 percent to 1,308 pence after reporting fiscal second-quarter sales that beat analysts’ estimates and dispelled concern that demand has slowed with plans to add 15 percent to its average retail space.

Revenue in the three months ended Sept. 30 rose to 463 million pounds ($729 million) from 382 million pounds a year earlier, the London-based company said. the average of 11 estimates compiled by Bloomberg was 447.8 million pounds.

ASML increased 6.3 percent to 28.20 euros after reporting third-quarter net income of 355 million euros ($489 million), topping the average estimate of 323 million euros in a Bloomberg survey of 16 analysts.

Carmakers, Chemicals Gain

Michelin & Cie., the world’s second-largest tiremaker, gained 5.6 percent to 49.18 euros as a gauge of auto stocks posted the best performance of the 19 industry groups in the Stoxx 600. Fiat SpA, Italy’s biggest automaker, jumped 7.8 percent to 4.92 euros and Germany’s Daimler AG surged 5.6 percent to 37.85 euros.

Clariant AG and Yara International ASA led a rally in chemical stocks, climbing 6.4 percent to 9.76 Swiss francs and 4.8 percent to 247 kroner, respectively. K+S AG, Europe’s biggest potash producer, added 3.9 percent to 43.80 euros.

A.P. Moeller-Maersk A/S rose 4.2 percent to 35,320 kroner as the world’s biggest container-shipping line said it agreed to sell its Maersk LNG A/S unit to Teekay LNG Operating LLC and Marubeni Corp. for $1.4 billion.

YIT plunged 4.1 percent to 12.49 euros. the company cut its full-year outlook for operating profit after making a 10 million-euro provision in the third quarter for an ammonia problem at its flats in St. Petersburg.

Man Group Plc, the world’s largest hedge fund manager, sank 6 percent to 155.30 pence after reporting that the net-asset value of its AHL Diversified fund fell 5.5 percent in the week through Oct. 10.
