Setting Up a Nail Salon – What You Will Need?

On January 17, 2012, in files Clippers Implements, by Luke Judge

Setting up a salon would be a dream come true for many nail technicians. Working for yourself, offering whichever treatments you like and making a lot of profit are all advantages that you can achieve by working for yourself. however, as great as it is there are also many potential downsides to setting up and running your own salon. unless you research more about these potential problems it is likely that your business will fail.

Things to Think About

When you are considering setting up your own salon the main points that you need to think about include:

o How much it will cost
o The treatments that you will provide
o Advertising
o Insurance and PAYE
o The hard work involved

Each of the above points needs to be given serious consideration. many people underestimate just how much hard work it is to set up a salon. once you have set up and opened the business that is when the hard work really begins. It will literally take over your life and you need to have 100% commitment to the business if you are to make it a success.

To ensure that you get enough business you will need to spend time and money advertising. this could be done online, through leaflets, with business cards and in local newspapers. It does not have to cost a lot of money but it is worth advertising everywhere that you can until you have built up a good customer database.

You will also need relevant insurance. You need to protect both yourself and your customers and staff and insurance will help you to do this. So no matter what goes wrong, if you are covered with insurance then you will be ok.

One factor which so many people forget about is the cost of setting up and running a salon. You have to purchase equipment, premises; you will have monthly utility bills to worry about too. If you plan on hiring staff then you have to worry about paying their wages as well as sorting out PAYE. It can be extremely expensive setting up a salon and so you do need to be prepared for that.

Overall working for yourself can be rewarding but first you need to work hard to make your business a success. You can get free business advice from the HABIA website. Offering you a HABIA Guide to Business Success for Beauty Therapy Salon, it will tell you exactly what you need to create a successful salon. It is always advisable to get professional advice whenever possible. If you follow these tips and research as much as you can then you have the best possible chance of making a success of your salon.

Santaquin man predicted Lamborghini crash

On December 29, 2011, in lamborghini, by Luke Judge

“Because I’d probably wreck it in the first five miles I driveit,” will be a line that goes down in history for David Dopp, theSantaquin resident who recently won a Lamborghini MurcielagoRoadster LP640. Little did he know when he said this during afinalist interview as part of Maverik’s “Joe Schmo to Lambo”contest, that he was indeed predicting the future.

Dopp, of Santaquin, was presented with the lime-greenLamborghini on Saturday. less then six hours later, the car worthabout $300,000 was sitting in a wrecking yard in Santaquin.

According to Dopp — a father of six — he drove over a hill andat a turn the car began to spin after skidding on black ice orgravel. the vehicle crashed into two fence posts, ending in afield.

Dopp and his passenger weren’t injured in the accident, but thecar had to be towed from the field.

It sustained damage to the fiberglass in the back and passengerside and had a flat tire.

Dopp told the associated Press the damage “isn’t super bad” — apunctured oil pan and tire and a few dents and scratches on thefront and rear ends. He said he couldn’t afford to pay taxes on thecar or the insurance, which runs $3,500 every six months.

The lime green convertible was being held by his insurancecompany at a Utah towing yard, according to the AP. It will be sentto an authorized Las Vegas dealer for repairs next week.

Dopp had planned to sell the expensive sports car.

“I already had offers on it. I’m going to sell it,” Dopp toldthe AP on Wednesday. “I have bills more important than aLamborghini. I’ve got a family to support.”

Dopp also received a $4,000 prize package from MillerMotorsports Park, where he will receive driving lessons.

Uninsured Patients Have Shorter Hospital Stays

Patients without insurance have significantly shorter hospital stays than patients with insurance, raising worrisome concerns that hospitals may have increased incentive to release these patients earlier to reduce their own costs of uncompensated care. Analyzing nationally representative data on a weighted sample of more than 90 million hospitalizations between 2003 and 2007 of patients aged 18 to 64 years, researchers found across all hospital types (for-profit, nonprofit and government), the average length of stay for preventable hospitalizations (thought to be avoidable with the use of appropriate preventive care and disease management) was significantly shorter for individuals without insurance (2.77 days) than for those with either private insurance (2.89 days) or Medicaid (3.19 days). For patients hospitalized for other diagnoses, the average length of stay was also shorter for uninsured patients (2.74 days) than for those with private insurance (2.86) or Medicaid (3.13). In terms of in-hospital mortality for patients with hospitalizations for non-preventable conditions, researchers found patients without insurance were at a higher likelihood of death in both for-profit and nonprofit hospitals. They found no significant difference in mortality among patients hospitalized for preventable conditions, though the limited number of deaths limited the analysis. the authors call on clinicians to advocate for all patients to be treated equally no matter what type of health insurance or payment type is being provided for services.

Children more Likely to Have Unmet Health Care Needs if Parents Lack a Medical Home

Children whose parents lack a usual source of health care ? a place they routinely go to for health care, such as a physician’s office or clinic ? typically receive fewer recommended health care services and experience more unmet needs, regardless of the child’s usual source of care and insurance status. Analyzing nationally representative data on 56,302 children participating in the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey, researchers found among the 12.4 percent of children who had a usual source of care but whose parents did not, there was a higher likelihood of an insurance coverage gap (aRR 1.33), having no doctor visits in the past 12 months (aRR 1.11), no yearly dental visits (aRR 1.12) and unmet medical or prescription needs (aRR 1.70), when compared with children with a usual source of care whose parents had a usual source of care. These findings highlight the need to consider the role parental access to health care plays in ensuring access to health care services for children. the authors assert there is a clear need to advocate for policy changes that improve access to a usual source of care for all family members. They conclude that keeping the entire family in mind when crafting any new reforms will be essential to achieving a sustainable health care system and the best possible health outcomes for children.

Safety-Net Hospital Closure has Profound Effects on Local Primary Care Workforce

Examining the effects of the closure of a large safety-net hospital in Los Angeles, Calif., on local primary care physicians, researchers found clinicians experienced profound clinical, professional and personal upheaval because of the overburdened system that resulted from the disruption in the network of care. Interviews with 42 local primary care physicians revealed numerous challenges that resulted from the loss of services, including reduced access to specialty care, overcrowding of other area hospitals and emergency departments, delayed and poorer quality of care for patients, reduced communication and disrupted patient connections, and a loss of colleagues and opportunities to teach residents and medical students. the authors conclude that primary care physicians should be informed and consulted when a major disruption to the health care delivery system is planned. They call for greater recognition of and support for the role primary care physicians play in coordinating care, promoting continuity of care and counseling patients and others about system changes during such transitions.

Editorial: Why the United States Continues to Fall further Behind In an accompanying editorial, Robert L. Phillips, Jr., MD, MSPH, director of the Robert Graham Center for Policy Studies in Family Practice and Primary Care, uses the articles by Mainous, DeVoe and Odom Walker to illustrate three major problems facing the United States’ health care system ? 1) lack of robust and comprehensive primary care, 2) insufficient access to timely care for a large portion of the population, and 3) incapacity take a population view of health. he concludes the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has important provisions that may help address some of these problems by helping to build more robust and comprehensive models of primary care.

Essay: Physicians should Leverage their Authority Within the Community to Advocate for Healthier Lifestyles In a compelling essay, a family physician posits a pathway by which greater physician advocacy for environmental change can help to assuage the epidemic of childhood obesity. Pointing out that this public health crisis resides in the community and demands environmental interventions, she calls for physicians to go beyond addressing lifestyle issues in the office and to engage with the community to affect environmental and policy change. U.S. physicians, she asserts, can synergize with efforts such as the White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity and the Surgeon General’s emphasis on changing the national conversation “from a negative one about obesity and illness” to a positive one about health and fitness.

Dutch Disciplinary Law System Offers Lessons for Patient Safety

Researchers in the Netherlands conduct an analysis of 250 random disciplinary law verdicts concerning Dutch family physicians between 2008 and 2010 and find a wide range of complaints, 74 of which included a serious outcome, most commonly related to a wrong diagnosis (45 percent) or insufficient care (23 percent). They conclude the Dutch disciplinary system, which differs fundamentally from a legal malpractice system in that it offers no potential financial benefit for patients involved, can be useful for learning about medical errors with the goal of improving patient safety. Because this analysis uncovered serious patient safety incidents not detected by other methods, including large-scale medical record review or incident reporting, they call for researchers to include disciplinary law verdicts in patient safety studies.

An accompanying editorial uses the Dutch study findings and the analogy of a lightning strike to remind readers that medical errors do happen, aren’t random and can be prevented. the author calls on the health care community to view error reports as opportunities for improvement from which people can gain a better understanding of why, when and how medical errors occur so they can be avoided and managed.

Medical Home Transformation Brings Modest Improvements in Quality and Patient Satisfaction

As the U.S. health care system moves rapidly to encourage the transformation of traditional primary care practices into patient-centered medical homes, researchers find reasons for avoiding unrealistic expectations about the rate of improvement in health or patient experience that will result. Describing trends in quality and patient satisfaction in 21 Minnesota primary care clinics as they worked toward level III recognition as medical homes by the National Committee for Quality Assurance, researchers find a 1 percent to 3 percent increase per year in patient satisfaction and a 1 percent to 4 percent increase per year in performance on quality measures. when compared with the average for other medical groups in the region, the rates of increase were greater for satisfaction, but similar for quality measures. They conclude that national policy makers’ expectations for large and rapid change are probably unrealistic.

E-Health Tools Produce Mixed Results in Improving Adherence to Cholesterol Guidelines

A multimodal approach to improving guideline implementation for cholesterol screening and management in primary care using a PDA-based physician decision support tool and patient activation kiosks in waiting rooms showed no benefit in an intent-to-treat analysis. Post hoc analysis appeared more promising, showing benefit regarding screening and improved LDL and non-HDL cholesterol goal attainment. Specifically, in post hoc analysis, researchers found practices reporting above-median use of the patient activation kiosk were more likely to have patients screened (OR = 2.54) than those with infrequent or no use. Physicians with above-median use of the PDA decision support tool were more likely to have their patients at LDL cholesterol goals (OR = 1.27) and non-HDL goals (OR=1.23) than physicians with below-median or no PDA use. the researchers call for more research on how to incorporate and increase adoption of user-friendly, patient-centered e-health tools to improve screening and management of chronic diseases and their risk factors.

Vintage Comic Books

On November 10, 2011, in green Lantern Comics, by Luke Judge

Buying vintage comic books need not be a hit-or-miss affair. You need to know how to safely buy vintage comic books, so that scheming traders don’t rip you off. here are some tips:

Check for authenticity. Make sure the comic books you are looking for are in excellent condition and have complete pages that are graded accordingly by the seller. Have the comics authenticated by organizations like the Comics Guaranty or any reputable third-party grading company. You will need to spend a little more money for these services, but it is comic insurance. after all, you don’t to spend your hard-earned money on cheap reproductions.

Buy only from trustworthy sellers. Online auctions are dangerous places to buy expensive vintage comic books, since you do not know the seller, and you have no guarantee that the item is in the condition declared. You also have no idea if it will be shipped to you as promised. so be sure to check a seller’s feedback rating. Avoid sellers with negative feedback. try messaging former customers to ask if the dealer really sent genuine vintage comics.

Never pay too much. before bidding on or buying a comic, be sure to check around for its value. there are many helpful sites on the Internet that are free — take advantage of them. You should likewise network with other collectors to hear about their buying experiences and get advice on pricing.

Protecting vintage comic books

Your vintage comic books are worth a lot of money. It only makes sense to protect them from the elements and day-today wear and tear. Experts advise you to put them in Mylar plastic bags with slim cardboard to prevent damage. Store them in a cardboard box designed just for comic books. all of these protective supplies are available at your local comic book store.

Ranking Homeowners Insurance Companies – The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

On September 1, 2011, in progressive House, by Luke Judge

How does your homeowners insurance company rank? The one time you don’t want to find out they rate at the bottom of the list is when its time to file a claim. Insurance companies are good at taking your premium payment every month, but when it comes to paying out claims some companies rate better than others.

Most of us never think about our homeowners insurance until its time to file a claim. in fact, we can go years of just sending in our premium payments and never even so much as calling up our agent to say hello. Then comes the day when you need to file a claim and you find out that red tape and bureaucracy are the name of the game. recently this situation played out all too well during Hurricane Katrina where certain homeowners insurance companies fought tooth and nail to keep from paying out claims to victims of this devastating event.

Thankfully there are a number of ways you can find out just how good your insurance company is and if they can do more than just issue a quote without a fight. A number of online and offline resources track insurance company ratings and custom satisfaction scores to help you be a more well-informed consumer.

A.M. Best (ambest.com) is one such source that provides information about the financial health of your homeowners insurance company. They track the ability of insurers to pay for losses in the event of a major disaster. Their rankings are the industry standard for measuring the financial well-being of all property, casualty and life insurance companies.

When it comes to actual consumer satisfaction ratings the data isn’t as well-kept as the financial ratings. A number of websites offer consumer feedback on insurance companies as well as reports from policy holders on general insurance company handling of routine inquires. The best source of insurance company satisfaction ratings may come from others in your community who often have first-hand experience with many of the local homeowners insurance companies in your area.

The right stuff

On August 30, 2011, in pegasus Collectables, by Luke Judge

WARM AND MELLOW: What the Pegasus Arms has going for it above all else is its location.

Let’s be fair. Snow is a pain in the a…. sure, people will say: “It’s soooo beautiful! you can fling round objects fashioned from snow at each other. you use the snow to fashion a false idol with a vegetable nose!”

Nuts to that. Snow is a cold, sloppy mess.

it looks pretty, yeah, I’ll give you that, but who cares, when you’re shovelling the driveway, or de-icing your heat pump every hour in a bid to keep warm.

Snow is bearable on only four occasions.

1. You’re a kid and you get the day off school.

2. when it falls on skifields.

3. when you want to crash your car, and make it appear like an accident for insurance purposes.

4. Or it’s Christmas.

for me, the last one is the crux.

Last week’s snow had me craving a warm pub, an open fire, jumpers kitted out with fairy lights, santa hats, and hot whiskeys.

Agreed, Ireland can’t deal with snow, but we have an impressive ability to put the cold to one side, don our wellies and flatcaps, and trudge through the white stuff to get to the pub for a pint of the black stuff.

If it were Christmas and if it were snowing, I think I’d like to have a hot whiskey at the Pegasus Arms.

The Pegasus Arms is a cosy little pub on Oxford Tce with an absolutely enormous smoking area.

A few Fridays back, two days or so before the snow, I walked down to the place from my place in St Albans, merry that I didn’t have to worry about a taxi.

What the Pegasus Arms has going for it above all else is its location. A pub in the city centre makes Christchurch so much more normal.

After spending minutes making my way through the smoking area, I found my mate Scouse, propped up at the bar, his spiky hair nearly touching the low ceiling. I grabbed a stool and sat down.

The first thing I noticed about the Pegasus Arms was just how attractive the staff were. behind the bar looked like a New Zealand’s next Top Model challenge.

one of the girls, looking slightly bewildered (she was just out of bed, she told me), took my order for Murphy’s Red, pulled half a Murphy’s Black and wandered off. I didn’t notice until a colleague stepped in and topped off the pint.

We ordered some extremely tasty onion rings, nice crisp wedges, some chickeny potato balls, and settled in for the all Blacks test.

I enjoyed everything about the Pegasus. It’s near my house. Its low ceilings and lighting means it’s warm and cosy. it was nicely busy, with a mix of people wearing normal clothes and off-the-wall fancy dress. I reckon I’ll even go back during the bizarrely hot Kiwi Christmas, sit outside in the smoking area and sip cold beers.

The Most Stolen Vehicle Is …

On August 27, 2011, in ferrari Parts Catalogues, by Luke Judge

NEW YORK — The Cadillac Escalade, a top pick of the rich and famous ranging from Hollywood celebrities to Wall Street executives, is also the favorite choice of thieves. The luxury SUV, which starts at more than $63,000, is the most likely vehicle to be targeted by crooks, according to a new study by the Highway Loss Data Institute. The study, based on insurance claims made for model year 2008 through 2010 vehicles, showed that the Escalade is six times more likely to be hit by thieves than the average vehicle, and its overall theft losses are more than 10 times as large. The rankings are based on vehicles that were stolen, had parts such as stereo systems taken or had other property inside the car snatched. Matt Moore, a vice president at the institute, says the Escalade gets hit more often because “It’s so wildly popular as far as pop culture goes. Watching the TV you see professional athletes coming in and out of them and other celebrities too. It’s a status symbol.” General Motors Co. said it’s trying to make the Escalade harder to steal. The SUV currently includes a system to prevent the vehicles from being hotwired and a steering column lock that makes it more difficult for thieves to push the vehicles away or load them on to flat-bed trucks. in addition, the 2012 Escalade will include sensors that set off an alarm when they detect a change in angle that would occur if the vehicle is being towed or being jacked up, along with sensors that sound alarms when windows are broken, a new wheel lock system and an improved steering column lock, GM said. HLDI, which is part of the Arlington, Va.-based Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, calculated the rankings based on the number of thefts per insured vehicle on the road. The data doesn’t include uninsured vehicles or those covered by the 20 percent of insurance companies that don’t report their numbers to the institute. a total of 10.8 claims were filed for every 1,000 insured Escalades, resulting in average loss payments of $10,555 per claim by insurance companies to the affected drivers, the study said. The Escalade’s ranking isn’t anything new. When combined, the four versions of the SUV have ranked at the top of the list for several years, the group says. Pickup trucks are also a favorite of thieves, taking the next four spots in the rankings, including the Ford F-250 crew cab four-wheel drive, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab, the Ford F-450 crew cab four-wheel drive and the GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab. Crew cabs are pickups with a second row of seats. Moore thinks that many of the pickup theft claims resulted from equipment or other items being stolen from truck beds while the vehicles were parked at work sites. The Chrysler 300 sedan was the sixth most likely vehicle to be targeted and the only car on the list, with 7.1 claims filed for every 1,000 insured cars and an average loss payment of $5,509, the group said. The vehicle least likely to be hit by thieves was the Audi A6 four-wheel drive, a luxury sedan. but its average loss payment per claim was $16,882. That’s 60 percent higher than that of the Escalade, according to the study. The A6 was followed by the Mercury Mariner, a small SUV, and the Chevrolet Equinox, a midsize SUV. The average vehicle in the study had 1.7 claims reported per 1,000 insured vehicles and an average loss payment per claim of $6,767, the study said. The full list: MOST LIKELY Cadillac Escalade – four versions ($10,555) Ford F-250 crew cab 4WD ($9,496) Chevrolet Silverado 1500 crew cab ($4,948) Ford F-450 crew cab 4WD ($11,701) GMC Sierra 1500 crew cab ($6,022) Chrysler 300 ($5,509) Ford F-350 crew cab 4WD ($9,088) Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 ($6,689) GMC Yukon ($6,645) Chrysler 300 HEMI ($8,294) LEAST LIKELY Audi A6 4WD ($16,882) Mercury Mariner – 2009-10 model years ($1,970) Chevrolet Equinox – 2010 model year ($2,069) Volkswagen CC – 2009-10 model years ($7,098) Chevrolet Equinox 4WD – 2010 model year ($4,870) Lexus RX 350 – 2010 model year ($6,084) Saturn Vue ($3,747) Chevrolet Aveo – 2009-10 model year ($7,642) BMW 5 series 4WD ($12,200) Mini Cooper Clubman mini ($1,883)

Estate Tax for 2010, 2011 and 2012 Is Finally Settled

On January 27, 2011, in retirement Cards, by

Finalization of our estate, gift and generation skipping tax took place on Dec. 17, 2010 when the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 was enacted. Its provisions settle our death-related taxes from 2010 to the end of 2012 – but not beyond that. Here are the provisions… Years 2011 and 2012 For 2011 and 2012, the first $5 million of your estate is exempt from federal estate tax. Any thing above that is taxed at a rate of 35%.

Both the federal gift tax and generation-skipping tax also have an exemption of $5 million each with excess subject to a 35% tax rate.

A new ‘portability tax exemption’ applies to the estate tax. This simply means that the unused exemption of the first spouse to die can be added to the exemption of the second spouse to die. So if the first-to-die spouse uses only $2 million of his $5 million exemption, his wife can add his remaining $3 million exemption to her $5 million exemption when she dies for an $8 million exemption.

Of course this is true if they both die during the next two years! After that, who knows…

Up until now bypass trust were created to shelter some of the estate by making sure the estate tax exemption amount of the first spouse to die was not wasted since there was no ‘portability examption’. So it initially appears that this estate tax exemption purpose of the bypass trust isn’t necessary. But, of courses, the bypass trust also has other purposes such as protecting children of an earlier marriage, and more…

If you died in 2010, you can now opt to be taxed in one of two ways. Year 2010 was supposed to have an unlimited estate tax exemption. You can choose to use this but your estate is subjected to a carry-over basis, as used for gift giving, for 2010 – not stepped up to fair market basis. So you need to consider if you’re dumping a lot of future capital gain taxes on your heirs.

Otherwise, you can opt for the $5 million exemption and use the typical stepped up to fair market basis on the date of your death.

*State Estate/Inheritance Taxes:

There’s probably no change in your state death taxes so you’ll have to make sure you consolidate your estate plan ‘wording’ and actions to accommodate them in any changes you make in your federal estate tax planning.

Of course, 2 years is a pretty short time and estate planning really needs to bridge many years. So what will happen after the 2012? It appears that all will revert to what we were scheduled to have for 2011. But then again, it may allow some members of congress to make a new bid to get rid of estate taxes altogether.

It’s a shame that the government can dangle a tax that can rob so much of an inheritance on almost a year-to-year basis. You’d think they owned your wealth.
