Types of Pianos

On January 17, 2012, in austin Powers Toys, by Luke Judge

If you are in the market for a new or used piano for sale, it is a good idea to know a little bit about the different shapes and styles of pianos that are most common, so that you can pick the best type of piano for you and your home. for many people, the size and shape are very important factors depending on the floor space available in the home. According to shape, horizontal and vertical are the two most basic categories of pianos.

These terms refer to how the piano’s soundboard is arranged. The soundboard on a horizontal piano is built parallel to the floor. These are also known as grand pianos, though they take up the most amount of space, they are considered to have the most full and lush sounds as well as dynamic range. amongst the horizontal, or grand, pianos are several different subcategories of piano designs. The Petite Grand is the smallest horizontal piano design, and it ranges from four to five feet in length, but it is still a quite a powerful instrument. The Baby Grand is perhaps the most popular of fine household pianos. These range from one to two feet longer than Petite Grands. Baby Grands can produce a marvelous sound without taking over an entire room. The next most well known horizontal piano is the Concert Grand. This piano is considered the finest in tone, key response, and action, and it consumes a whopping nine feet in length. It is the most commonly used piano for professional music productions such as symphonies and operas. Between the Concert grand and the Baby Grand, there are a host of other sizes, such as the Medium Grand, Parlor Grand, and Ballroom Grand, each with its own unique shape and sound.

Vertical piano designs are much more common in the home for a couple of reasons. because the soundboard is arranged vertically, the piano takes up less space and also requires less material for manufacturing, thus they are less expensive than most horizontal varieties. There are four basic types of vertical pianos. Spinet pianos are approximately 36 to 38 inches in height and around 60 inches in width, and they are the smallest of vertical pianos. for those that live in extremely limited quarters, the Spinet is an ideal solution, however, the power and accuracy are somewhat compromised due to the size. The Console piano is taller than the Spinet at 40 to 43 inches and very similar in width. Console pianos are designed to compliment interior design, so they come in many different shapes, finishes, and designs. a Studio piano is the most common vertical piece found in music schools around the world because it has a larger soundboard while still a vertical design. This creates a great tone quality due to the longer strings. However, the tallest of vertical pianos is the actual Upright piano. These range from 50 to 60 inches in height and are most common amongst the grandparent generation. There are many of these built fifty years ago that have maintained a very rich tone and rival some horizontal designs in quality.

Take the time to see and play several of these types of pianos before you decide on the right one for you. This largely depends on your budget, the amount of space you have, and how you plan to use it. If you are opening a new concert hall, the answer is simple. The concert grand is your only option. However, if you are a student learning to play for the first time, you might consider on of the vertical varieties.

Celtic Music – The Tin Whistle

On January 12, 2012, in irish Folk Traditional, by Luke Judge

The Tin Whistle (sometimes called a pennywhistle) is a simple and cheap instrument. It’s simply a metal tube with six fingerholes and a mouthpiece (much like a recorder); it has a range of about two octaves. Costs range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars — although some of the best players play only the cheaper brands.

The tin whistle is a simple instrument — and it’s simple to play, and simple to play easy tunes. but — it’s not simple to master the instrument may be cheap, but you’ll have to pay for mastery . by practicing the haunting whistle tunes from the movie Titanic illustrate the deep soul found in this instrument.

This instrument is commonly made from metal (usually brass) with a molded whistle mouthpiece. By playing it open (not covering any of the six fingerholes), then by covering each fingerhole in turn, you can play the 7 notes in a diatonic (a simple Do-Re-Mi scale — essentially the white keys on a piano) scale. Blow a little bit harder and you’ll play the same note, but an octave higher. while it is a diatonic instrument, you can achieve sharps and flats by half-covering fingerholes.

Since there are essentially only two open notes — a note, then the note an octave higher when you blow harder — each tin whistle is said to represent a certain Key signature. For instance, if the open note sounds a D, then the whistle is considered to be in the key of D. Many players carry a small set of whistles in the most commonly used keys.

Some people don’t realize you can actually tune a tin whistle You do so by sliding the metal barrel of the whistle in and out of the mouthpiece head. some whistles have the head glues securely to the barrel. You can usually loosen the glue by holding the joined portion under hot running water. Don’t use boiling water — this may melt the plastic whistle head

Key signatures commonly found in celtic Music are D Major and G Major. By default, all tin whistles are in a Major key (since they play a diatonic scale). however, if you begin your scale with all the fingerholes covered (instead of all fingerholes open), then you’re beginning one step higher than a diatonic scale — which results in a minor key signature For instance, a tin whistle in D can play in E Minor if you begin your scale by covering all the fingerholes. Interestingly enough, the chord sequence E Minor and D Major is commonly found in Celtic Music. (This is the same chord sequence used in What would You do with a Drunken Sailor.) a whistle in G Major could easily play in a Minor (A Minor and G being another commonly found chord sequence).

Pool Floats

On December 13, 2011, in floats, by Luke Judge

Of course every pool needs some pool floats readily available to add to the fun when everyone is in the water having splashing around. the great thing about pool floats is that they know no age boundaries and everyone from the very young to the young at heart will find themselves making full use of pool floats if they are available.

There is a wide selection of floats that are filled with a soft rubber foam that stays permanently inflated and requires no maintenance. while these soft rubber foam floats will cost a little bit more than conventional inflatable ones, they do have a much longer life span.

If you choose to buy any larger inflatable floats the one important thing to remember is to also get some type of air pump device to inflate them with or they will inevitably end up in the scrap heap. while inner tubes do work great at the ocean or rivers for riding in the water in they don’t work as well in a pool.

This is because they have an inflater nozzle on them and with all of the frolicking that goes on in the pool environment inevitably someone will get a nice scratch on them from the metal nozzle. Two things to bear in mind with regards to pool toys is that dogs can be attracted to them and will chew on them. the other thing to bear in mind is that they have to be stored out of the way when they are not in use.

A nice net hanging off of a fence or a wall out of the sun works great for storing your floats and also can help to keep them out of reach of the dog if you have one. So before you run right out and buy what you think you need, take a good look at all that is available and then get some, because a pool without floats can be a boring place.

Rangers blast Caps, 6-3, behind Fedotenko's two-goal performance

On December 6, 2011, in helmets Caps Collectables, by Luke Judge

WASHINGTON – whether it was increased confidence or the injection of a speedy skater into the lineup — perhaps both — the Rangers certainly didn’t seem like the slow-footed team of the past two games.

Quicker on the forecheck, quicker to the puck, quicker to the net, the Rangers were able to snap a two-game skid with a 6-3 win over the Capitals on Friday afternoon at Verizon Center.

“we just tried to address some things,” said Ruslan Fedotenko, who scored twice, including once in the Rangers’ four-goal second period, and was rewarded with the celebratory Broadway Hat. “we had a little more jump today. it felt like everybody was skating well.”

The Rangers (11-5-3) concluded a 2-2-0 road trip and will host the Flyers today.

Carl Hagelin, 23, a sixth-round pick in 2007 who was called up from Connecticut (AHL) on Thursday and had an assist in his NHL debut, added the dose of speed and, along with fellow call-up John Mitchell, 26, combined with Brian Boyle for a fourth line that coach John Tortorella actually used.

“for some reason, the past couple of games and, I thought, for a little bit in the first period, you end up watching and you might be thinking too much,” Tortorella said. “You put a guy in like Hagelin, that speed that he has, I just think everybody grows off of that. just one or two guys with some speed, I think your team looks quicker.”

“those kind of losing streaks, maybe you have less confidence,” Fedotenko added. “You force certain things. You don’t read and react and you turn the puck over. The more you try to do, the worse it gets.”

Along with Fedotenko, Marian Gaborik – off a great pass from Derek Stepan — Artem Anisimov and Boyle scored in the second as the Rangers matched their season high for goals in a period. Fedotenko, Anisimov and Boyle each came into the game with one goal apiece this season.

Anisimov’s power-play goal at 6:52 snapped the Rangers’ 0-for-14 drought with the man advantage.

Though he didn’t score, Stepan may have had the best game of all, particularly the way he pressured the puck. he was credited with two takeaways and likely doubled that figure on the coach’s stat sheet.

Perenara and Sopoaga dropped by Wellington

On August 10, 2011, in Rugby Union Memorabilia, by Luke Judge

HAMISH BIDWELL

Tactical kicking deficiencies have cost Lima Sopoaga and TJ Perenara their places in the Wellington rugby team to play Hawke’s Bay tomorrow night.

the new Zealand under-20 stars were the two high-profile players jettisoned from the Lions lineup after Sunday’s humbling 32-0 loss to Bay of Plenty.

Lock Api Naikatini drops out of the 23-man squad, while prop Whetu Henry is replaced by the returning Neemia Tialata and Serge Lilo is out injured.

but it’s the inclusion of Michael Hobbs and Frae Wilson for Sopoaga and Perenara that is most interesting.

“Lima’s still trying to find his way and he’s a little bit tired,” Wellington coach Andre Bell said of the first five-eighth.

“It’s an opportunity for Michael [at 10]. in the Hurricanes region we’re short there and he has asked to play there … and he’s confident that he can play there.”

Bell said Wilson has earned his first start at halfback, after three energetic performances as a replacement. Both he and Hobbs are primarily runners, but it will be their punting which determines how permanent these moves are.

“The killer in the two losses that we have had [to Auckland and BoP] has been our territory. so we’ve had a good look at that and this is an opportunity for both Frae and Hobbsy to hopefully rectify that,” Bell said.

Piri Weepu’s signing with the Blues means the Hurricanes are also thin at halfback and while Wilson wouldn’t loom as his obvious replacement, he does have a pedigree in that regard.

like Weepu, Wilson is a Wellington boy who boarded at Te Aute College and represented Hawke’s Bay at age-group level. since leaving school the 21-year-old has shone for Weepu’s club, Wainuiomata, and now finds himself wearing the Wellington No9 jersey his mentor donned 55 times.

“It’s good knowing someone like Piri and sort of following in his footsteps,” Wilson said.

“He’s been there and done that and I got to know him a bit when he came to [visit] our school a few times. when I need help and stuff I text him and he helps me out.”

Collectively pulling their own finger out has been the “work on” at Wellington training, since Sunday’s shameful defeat to the Steamers.

“We went into that game in a bit of a holiday-mode and that first scrum was a red flag. We got nailed there and straight away I thought `Here we go’,” forwards coach Richard Watt said.

“We were in the Mount, staying in the twin towers and right on the beach, so there was a real holiday feel about the thing that I picked up when we did our pre-game lineouts.

“I said to them `Hey, we’re not here for a bloody holiday’ and that was at one o’clock in the afternoon. We talked about how BoP hadn’t been punched in the nose yet. like we got punched in the nose in round two [against Auckland] so we felt if we turned up physically we could do that to them. but we didn’t and if you don’t turn up physically, then that’s a mental thing.

“It was two teams playing their third game in a week but they turned up mentally and we didn’t.

“We [coaches] can talk about being there mentally, but only the players can bring that.”

WELLINGTON: Jason Woodward, Lote Raikabula, Alapati Leiua, Shaun Treeby, Julian Savea, Michael Hobbs, Frae Wilson, Victor Vito, Scott Fuglistaller, Faifili Levave, mark Reddish, Jeremy Thrush, Neemia Tialata, Dane Coles, Jacob Ellison. Reserves: Motu Matu’u, Whetu Henry, Brad Shields, Dean Brunsdon, TJ Perenara, Lima Sopoaga, Apoua Stewart, Reggie Goodes.

– the Dominion Post

The game plan was obviously for no tactical kicking other than to put it in the air because every player who got the bloody ball did it. You knew it was game plan when Alipati Leuia did it. He wanted to run and looked to the right and then put it in the air. Julian Savea doing it as well. Take a look in the mirror coaches, the only bad tactics were yours. You would have to drop half the team if this is the reason.

Our Tomorrow: The Gulland Forge Broadfork!

On March 26, 2011, in forks, by

The UPS guy showed up a little bit ago to deliver my new, hand-made broadfork gifted to me by Larry Cooper. He makes them by hand and let me tell you, what an awesome tool. The ash handles had a really nice smell thanks to the linseed oil/turpentine finish and I pushed them into the metal fork assembly. It was then that I noticed the engraving “Our Tomorrow” which, honestly, brought a tear to my eye. Just when I thought such a gift could not possibly get any better there is that thoughtful detail. Larry: THANK YOU.

I’ve not had a chance to use it much yet as I was eager to post this. But I DID use it a bit and wowza, this is one fantastic tool. It just works, like an extension of the body. I stepped on to the center of it and my weight pushed it into the earth and then I just gave it a gentle rock back to loosen the soil. I can’t wait to work some beds with this! Everything about it from the handles to the tines just feels so solid. America needs to return to this kind of hand-made quality.

Will post more when I’ve had a real chance to give the broadfork a real workout!
