Bowling event raises money for children of Easter Seals

On January 14, 2012, in bowling Balls, by Luke Judge

Anna Jain enthusiastically let go of the bowling ball Thursday morning and watched as it meandered slowly down the lane, bouncing off the bumpers before knocking down seven pins.

She was joined at Uncle Buck's Fishbowl in Bass Pro Shops by about 100 other children and their parents at a new event called Strikes for Tykes. The mission was clear: to have fun and educate children about the work of Easter Seals.

Nine-year-old Anna is a former patient of Easter Seals. She wants other kids to be able to follow in her footsteps and graduate from the therapy programs offered by the organization.

"(Easter Seals) means that there's hope and dignity given to children that are otherwise overlooked," said Liz Jain, Anna's mother.

The event was put together in about six weeks by a volunteer team led by Paul Prest and Mike Joyner. Their biggest concern was finding a way for children to be involved with helping other children.

"We do a lot of fundraiser events, but they're mainly adult events," said Prest.

while the primary focus on Thursday was to have a good time, the organizers hope it will begin a conversation about ways kids can look out for and accept their peers.

"We need to get people at a young age to understand disabilities are not a bad thing," said Prest. "every child is the same. Some just need a little more help than others."

when it came to finding a location, Uncle Buck's was the obvious choice.

Jeff Westbay, the general manager of the restaurant and bowling alley, is the father of a teenager who was diagnosed with autism at Easter Seals more than 10 years ago.

"I know firsthand what Easter Seals can do," he said.

Westbay relayed the initial request to the shop's corporate office, which in turn donated the facility and refreshments at no cost.

Though this is the first year the organization has hosted an event like this, both the organizers and Westbay hope it can continue and grow into an annual event.

Wholesale Educational Toys

On January 10, 2012, in dogs Of War Toys, by Luke Judge

Every parent wants his or her child to learn fast and grow up to become efficient and smart. Educational toys offer the best ways to help a child learn and have fun simultaneously. Parents who purchase educational toys for their children can save a lot of money by buying them at wholesale prices.

A wholesaler buys toys in large quantities from the manufacturers or importers. He sells smaller quantities to retailers, who in turn sell them to customers. Typically, wholesale rates are offered only to retailers who purchase the toys in bulk. however, there are times when a wholesaler sells these toys directly to the end user, namely the parent or teacher. There are a number of educational toys available at wholesale prices throughout the year. They are generally old stock that the wholesaler would like to dispose of quickly to make room for new models. consequently, the wholesaler is inclined to sell them at cheaper rates.

The sale of educational toys at wholesale prices also happens during summer breaks or during festivals. When parents or teachers buy educational toys in large quantities, cheaper rates are offered to them.

There are many companies offering educational toys on the Internet at wholesale rates. People can easily access the websites that offer brand name toys or locally made toys at reasonable rates.

The most popular educational toys now offered at wholesale rates on the Internet are kid’s laptops. these laptops are a good buy, because they make little kids computer savvy at a young age. Children really enjoy having their own laptops just like their parents, and have fun gaining lots of useful knowledge through their laptops

There are also other electronic learning toys for kids of all ages that provide a complete learning experience. in the past, many parents were hesitant to buy educational toys for their kids because the prices were really exorbitant. The availability at wholesale prices has proved to be an incentive for parents to buy educational toys.

Gift guide: More great girl gift ideas

On January 10, 2012, in hand-made Dolls, by Luke Judge

Every little girl seems to want a dollhouse at one point or another in her lifetime. If your little girl is asking for one this holiday season, I’d suggest checking out Playmobil’s Large Grand Mansion. the company sent me a sample and my two toy testers were really excited for me to open the box.

Unfortunately, the Grand Mansion does not come assembled. Parents make note, this toy takes anywhere from two to four hours to fully assemble. so plan on setting aside the time…it’s not a quick assembly due to the numerous small parts.

Thankfully I have shopped quite a bit at IKEA in my past so putting things together is a skill of mine. Lucky for me the directions were easy to follow, mostly because they were illustrations. but make note, the assembly directions is a whopping 24 page booklet.

My two toy testers enjoyed watching the Grinch Who Stole Christmas as well as having a lunch break with their Dad. Yup, it takes a while to put this mansion together! but once assembled, it is a masterpiece. And I also felt a personal sense of accomplishment.

It truly is a Large Grand Mansion, boasting three stories; two grand staircases; shuttered windows; beautiful landscaping in the form of numerous window flower boxes; a stained glass window; as well as a working doorbell. My toy testers loved playing with their new dollhouse. For hours…every parent loves to hear that!

Parents should note however that the door bell requires two AAA batteries which are NOT included. also note that the little flowers which are part of the window boxes are very easy to remove and can pop off. After one day’s use, I decided to forego repeatedly picking them up off the floor and decided to superglue them to the flower bases. Problem solved.

Furniture sets are sold separately and prices vary. For more information, click here. STARS: ****

Another great gift option this season are creative craft kits for your child. Craft kits are great ways to spend quality time with your child as well provide them with some hands-on creativity.

One such gift is Crayola’s Jewelry Boutique with Model Magic. Marketed to kids ages six and up Crayola’s Jewelry Boutique lets it user create bracelets, necklaces and earrings. it comes with eight packs of assorted Model Magic colors including red, purple and green; five bracelet charms; 18 gems; three pendant charms; five toggle sets; two necklace cords; two shape cutters; four earring posts and ear wires; one elastic cord; bead dryer rack; bead punch and one ounce of bead glaze. it also comes with a workstation that provides easily accessible storage for the multitude of craft pieces that accompany the kit.

The Model Magic is easy to ply and work with and can be combined and mixed with other colors to create unique beads when using the jewelry spinner. You can up the bling factor by adding dazzling, sparkling finish with the bead glaze or use a few of the gems and interchangeable pendant and bracelet charms.

My toy tester had a blast using the Jewelry Boutique and created her own new accessory line which she intends to “sell” to earn some extra cash this holiday season. Who knew we had a budding entrepreneur in the family? SRP is $19.99 and is available for purchase at most national retail stores including Walmart and Toys R Us. STARS:  ***

With all the technology these days, kids often forget about the wonderful worlds that books provide. Here’s two great reads that are educational and enjoyable. Deemed social and emotional learning for kids, The Mother Company’s two latest books, My Feelings Activity Book and A little Book about Feelings are both beautifully illustrated; easy to read and speak directly to toddlers. Colorful, engaging and educational, I love both of these books. My Feelings Activity Book is marketed to kids ages three to eight and retails for $12.95. this book lets the kid become the author using fill-in-the-blank activities that makes the book feel like a junior diary, in a sense. a little Book about Feelings is marketed to kids ages two to six and it retails for $12.95. I found it very engaging and eye opening to hear the responses my four year old provided as we worked through the Activity Book and with cherish it forever. Both books can be purchased online at Ruby’s Studio.  STARS:  ***

There are quite a few dolls out there to choose from this holiday season. so I wanted to take a moment to inform you about Hearts for Hearts Girls, a charitable doll line and fashion collection from Playmates Toys. the line features six dolls from around the world – each having a unique story to share. As an Asian mother, I find it difficult to find dolls that reflect my daughters’ multicultural background so I was very happy to learn about this diverse doll line. I was even happier to find out that the purpose of the collection is to help empower girls to help initiate change in their communities, countries and around the world.

The company sent us Tipi from Loas. a beautiful doll, Tipi came with a woven friendship bracelet; a doll-sized comb and hair elastic; a girl-sized Hearts4Hearts power bracelet and storybook. For more information on your Hearts4Hearts doll, girls can log on to hearts4heartsgirls.com. Once we did we learned that Tipi lives near the Mekong River, her father makes shadow puppets; she has a little brother named Daeng. In fact, you can read Tipi’s Diary and learn all about her life in Laos.

The web site also features information on all six of the doll’s different cultures and you can even read about real girls who are making a difference. Additionally, the kid-safe website contains games, activities, stories and great ideas on how girls can change the world.

Even better, a portion of each doll sale is donated to a non-profit organization that helps children from that doll’s country. Playmates Toys is working with non-profit partner World Vision to make this possible. Marketed to kids ages six to 12 years old, Hearts4Hearts dolls’ SRP is $29.99 per doll and are available for purchase at Toys “R” Us, Target, Amazon.comand hearts4heartsgirls.com. STARS: ****

Disclaimer: I was provided with product samples but all opinions are solely mine and/or my toy testers.

Good Diet For Toddlers

On January 10, 2012, in jerseys Shirts, by Luke Judge

Nutrition is important to everyone. Maintaining a diet and exercising helps our body to be strong and healthy. As a result, the body tends to have fewer complications and we live longer. more importantly, the earlier we start a healthy lifestyle the better.

There are many responsibilities that we as parents have. We need to provide, food, clothing and shelter for our children. And having proper nutrition plays a big part in raising a toddler. with a well planned diet, your toddler will grow up to be healthy and happy.

During the early stages of our lives our bodies are constantly changing and growing at faster rate than when we get older. Research shows that babies grow 3 inches about every 3 months, while toddlers grow at a slower rate, usually 3-5 inches for a year. This is way it’s important to start off right with a healthy diet.

Prior to the toddler stage the main source of nutrition was either breast milk or formula, but now it’s time to introduce more solids types of food. It’s time to introduce different tastes and textures to our toddlers.

There are a few important vitamins and minerals which are an important part of a toddler’s diet, milk, which provides vitamin D and calcium; iron, which is a mineral. You can find iron in meats, poultry, fish, beans, and tofu. Furthermore, tomatoes, broccoli, oranges and strawberries contain vitamin C which helps the body absorb iron.

On the average, a toddler will require between 1000 – 1400 calories a day. Based on a 1000 calorie diet, the USDA recommends:

Grains – 3oz
Vegetables – 1 cup
Fruit – 1 cup
Milk – 2 cups
Meat & Beans – 2oz

So a sample toddler diet would look something like this:

Breakfast:
1oz oatmeal
cup apple
cup whole milk

Morning snack:
whole wheat toast
cup pear

Lunch:
whole wheat pasta
peas
cup whole milk
1 oz meat and green beans

Afternoon snack:
cup carrots
cup fat free milk

Dinner:
1oz rice
broccoli
whole milk
1oz chicken lima beans

For a child growing up, diet is important. As parents we need to provide the best we can so our toddlers grow up healthy. since I’m not an expert, the best advice you can get is visiting your child’s pediatrician to discuss a meal plan for your child.

Wood Bunk Bed Designs

On January 6, 2012, in bunk Beds, by Luke Judge

Wood bunk beds are quite popular among the younger generation, and the parents tend to also favor them because there wooden finish allows them to fit into any dcor and design. The wood bunk bed designs may vary, but they all are made of sturdy materials and the finishes provided by the manufacturers are exquisite. The different wood bunk bed designs are made to facilitate different types of families and their needs. Below you will be introduced to a few types.

Twin Over Twin Designs

These designs refer to having one twin size bed above the other in the bunk style. this is often used for two kids that are about the same age group and body size. maybe between the ages of 7 – 10 years old depending on their own growth spurt.

Full Over Full designs

This design is very similar to the twin over twin bunk beds, with the exception of the bed sizes which are full sizes. this design caters to older children often 11 to teenage years.

Twin over Full

This design is actually becoming quite common, because it allows two kids of different age groups to share a bunk and the fact is that most families will have two are more kids that are not within the same age group or body size. this type of bed allows them to share the same room and still have bed space that is just right for them. The older child can have the full bottom section while the younger child inhabits the twin size bunk top.

The designs above are only referring to the bed sizes but there are other variations among those same wood bunk bed designs as well. some beds may have drawers attached to the bottom, while others have one bed on top but the bottom section is set like a sofa. there are many designs of bunk beds made from wood and all of them allow the kids to have a spacious room while still fulfilling their sleep worthy duties.

France recognizes local ‘hero’ decades later

On December 31, 2011, in Badges Patches Collectables, by Luke Judge

Harold Brown is not just a hero; he’s a knight. The people of France recently thanked the Superior man for his service during World War II by naming him a Knight of the Legion of Honor. Their gratitude shines from a small box the Consul General of France sent to Superior a few weeks ago. Inside, the French Legion of Honor Medal rests, a silent testament to Brown’s valor.

The Superior man quit high school, determined to prompt his parents into letting him join the U.S. Army.

“We were at war and I wanted to be part of it,” Brown said. “I think everyone wanted to go.” But his folks made him wait until he turned 18 to join.

The Superior man enlisted in June 1943 and originally trained with the military police. But when the call came for more men in the infantry, Brown transferred to the 42nd “Rainbow” Infantry Division. He shipped overseas with Task Force Linden to shore up front line troops in the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge. it was a shocking entry to war.

“From then on it was fight and fight and fight every day,” Brown said.

He learned to tell the different sounds of the shells as they whined overhead. each day Brown survived in the foxholes on the front line, he said, boosted his chances of making it through.

As a soldier with the communication platoon, Brown was called on to repair telephone wires that were damaged by vehicles or the enemy. While repairing a line to the 2nd Battalion, the Superior man found himself in a foxhole with three German tanks nearby. The Germans, dressed in white, began to get out of the tanks so Brown fired. They jumped back in the tanks, turned their guns around, and fired. Brown’s ears were damaged by a bomb that exploded next to the foxhole, sending shrapnel through his left ear.

Once they started pushing the German troops back, Brown remembers crossing rivers on pontoon boats and fighting from town to town through France, then Germany to the Austrian border. Along the way, the 42nd Infantry Division liberated the concentration camp at Dachau. Brown recalled seeing the furnaces and boxcars full of prisoners.

“They tried to get rid of them before we came and they shot through the cars,” he said. “It was awful.”

Brown completed his service in Austria as part of the army of occupation after the Germans surrendered. He returned to Superior in the spring of 1946, having attained the rank of sergeant.

“We all have to do something,” Brown said. “I’m glad I served. The experience was good. I saw the world. I’m glad I came home.”

A lot of his friends did not, he said.

Brown didn’t return empty handed. A German shepherd he picked up while fighting in Germany returned with him. Commo, named after the communications division, lived with him for about 10 years. Brown found employment as a butcher, worked at the King Midas Flour mill and became a business agent for teamsters in Duluth. about a year ago, the Superior man received a Purple Heart for the incident when his ears were injured. He credited former Douglas County Veterans Service Officer John Scheldroup and his assistant Ellen Oaks for digging up the information and putting in the work to have him recognized.

For his service, Brown was also awarded the Bronze Star, Minnesota War Memorial Dedication, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Occupation of Germany Medal, European/African Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, and the Presidential Service Citation for the American Campaign.

Those who know Brown say he’s always been humble about his service.

Brown is a “fairly self-effacing gentleman who doesn’t really brag much,” said Rhoda Nagorski, director of Senior Connections in Superior, said. But he is a wonderful storyteller, she said.

“It was like ‘pulling teeth’ to get him to accept the fact that he really is a hero,” said Brown’s son-in-law, Randy L. Clausen. During a recent trip to Superior, Clausen and his wife, Connie, were involved in a car accident. The two were bruised, but not seriously injured. when they got to Brown’s home for their visit, they talked about their experience. it seemed to stir Brown, who opened up to share with them about his WWII service.

“And a story it was,” Clausen said. Brown also showed them his French medal.

Brown said he could have taken part in a presentation ceremony for it. The Legion of Honor award, created by Napoleon, is the highest honor that France can bestow upon those who have achieved remarkable deeds for France. instead, he chose to have it mailed.

“Nobody wants to blow their own horn,” Brown said. instead, his medals silently shine. He is, Clausen said, “our hero.”

I-SS examines bus stops, makes five changes

On December 30, 2011, in torches & Lamps, by Luke Judge

In response to the tragic incident that claimed the life of North Iredell High School student Mason Barazotti as he walked to his bus stop Nov. 2, Iredell-Statesville Schools visited and re-evaluated every bus stop that had been requested to be changed by parents, but had been deemed safe enough to go unchanged by I-SS in the last two years.

A total of 155 stops were visited by I-SS’ five routing specialists that oversee parts of the district’s bus routes in the last couple months. Of the 155, five were changed the second time around.

“With the tragedy that happened, we just wanted to make sure nothing slipped through the cracks,” I-SS Director of Transportation Terry Campbell said. “we take it very seriously.”

Barazotti was killed after being struck by a vehicle on the way to his bus stop. He was walking in the road one-tenth of a mile from the stop that was a quarter-mile from his home when he was hit. Barazotti’s mother requested the stop be moved closer to their home one month before her son’s death, citing darkness and low visibility around curves in the road as dangerous issues, but her request was turned down.

That stop was not one of the five changed during the reassessment.

I-SS received about 600 requests to change stops in the last couple years, and modified around 450 of them on initial request, said I-SS Deputy Superintendent of Operations Ron Hargrave. many of these are due to the age and maturity level of the students walking to the stops along with other specially identified problems, like if a child would have been forced to walk past a sex offender’s home.

The school system will also be taking more steps in the future to teach its students and their parents about transportation safety with the focus on increasing public awareness about the potential dangers.

I-SS Board of Education member Bryan Shoemaker said the school system had been in contact with Iredell County EMS to gain permission to use their 911 call service to remind people throughout the year that there are large groups of children walking along roads in the morning and afternoon all across the county.

The school board discussed allowing individual parents to pay extra for driveway pick-ups during its Dec. 5 Committee of the Whole meeting, but decided against it because the policy would be unfair to those who can’t pay.

“if I have money to have my kid picked up at my door, but the kid two doors down doesn’t, then what is the bus supposed to do, not pick up that kid two doors down?” Shoemaker said. “it just doesn’t work.”

Picking every child up at his or her doorstep would cause I-SS to double its transportation budget and is impossible, Hargrave said.

The school system is developing a safety tips and rules sheet for elementary schools that will be given to students, put on the school’s website and handed to all bus drivers. Hargrave said there would be a concerted, regular effort to remind students during the school year of transportation safety.

“Sometimes kids lose their focus over break, so we’ll go over that again when we come back,” Hargrave said, implying that the transportation talks would be an annual thing at the beginning of each semester for students.

The school system has also been researching safety equipment students could use when walking to and from bus stops. While I-SS cannot afford to buy all its students flashlights and reflector vests, it did find vendors students can purchase the items from for as low as $2.50 per flashlight and $5 per reflector vest.

Hargrave suggested that perhaps PTOs could raise funds for such a purpose. Anyone wishing to buy these items can contact I-SS.

“you don’t think about how important these things are,” Shoemaker said. “It’s just one of those things where you think people look out for kids … but people need reminders.”

I-SS has consolidated hundreds of bus stops in the last few years to deal with a collapsing budget and rising fuel costs. the transportation money given to I-SS from the state assumes compliance with statutes set by the General Assembly, which say that children can walk up to a mile and that buses cannot leave a main road for less than a half- mile to pick up fewer than 10 students, as was the case on the Barazotti stop. any time that I-SS decides to make a stop more convenient than the state requires, it means money taken out of the classroom, Hargrave said.

Best Baby Toys for Christmas

On December 27, 2011, in fantasy Toys, by Luke Judge

Christmas is the time when every child looks forward to the gifts they are going to get Christmas is the one time when children get the gifts they want as they get to ask their parents to get them the things they like, but what about babies? People tend to get confused what to get babies who are around 6 months of age. There are a variety of baby toys which can be found in stores, it is just a matter of looking. This article will help you buy just the right kind of Christmas toy to give a cute little baby.

What would a baby like?

The very first thing you would have to consider is what kind of a Christmas toy a baby would like. since babies are generally attracted to toys which are bright in color, it would be a good idea to buy something which is very bold and which does not have small parts to it as this could be hazardous for the baby. Babies tend to like toys which are big in size and which they can touch and feel clearly. Baby toys which make sounds is also something very interesting for a baby as it grabs their attention.

Getting toys which encourage development

It is during the first few months, around the first 6 months in fact that a child begins to develop and starts recognizing the faces and things around him/her. Due to this reason, stuffed animals would make the perfect Christmas toy. Sine these baby toys are easy and soft to hold, they are colorful and attractive in terms of their expressions, and stuffed animals would make the perfect gift.

As babies begin to learn how to crawl, toys which help them in this activity would also be a great choice of Christmas gift. A walking and talking toy cat/dog would perhaps be a good idea as the baby would want to crawl after it due to excitement. Any toy which would help make the baby want to move and play around and focus on his/her environment would be a great choice.

Everyone knows that babies have a fascination with any and every object they get their hands on and the moment something comes in their hand, it goes straight to the mouth That’s right; you need to make sure that you do not buy any toys which have small parts in them to give to a baby for Christmas. The best way to make sure whether the toy is safe for a baby that young is to check the manufacturers label on the product which states which age group the toy is suitable for.

Toys which are safe

Here are a few ideas of what exactly you could buy as a Christmas toy to give to a baby of around 6 months of age:

- Rattles
- Mobiles for the cot
- Stuffed animals
- Soft balls
- Squeezable toys
- Musical toys

Whatever you do, make sure that the toy is suitable for the baby you are intending to gift to. Good luck

The Harmful Effects of Household Cleaners on Children and Unborn Babies

On December 19, 2011, in Tradesmen & Household Services, by Luke Judge

Many people often find themselves cleaning their home like crazy, because they want to make sure their home is clean for their children. unfortunately most people have no clue about the harmful toxins found in many household cleaning products. Many mothers an fathers find themselves using bleach to clean items bought at yard sales, and even to clean walls or bathrooms. Why should they not? I mean the bottles do not say how toxic it is all the manufacture cares about is making a parent think the product is great to kill germs, so as parents we buy them. they fail to alert users of the toxins contained in these cleaning products. Most parents find themselves cleaning off the baby’s crib, toys, and floors with cleaning products, that are leaving more toxins behind than the toxins they are cleaning because the companies are NOT required by law to alert the consumer

Here are some great facts about common household cleaning products found in many homes across the globe today Formaldehyde, phenol, benzene and toluene are found in common household cleaners and all have been linked as cancer causing and toxic to the immune system. Children are highly vulnerable to chemical toxicants. Pound for pound of body weight children drink more water, eat more food and breathe more air than adults. the implication of this is that children will have substantially heavier exposures than adults to any toxicants that are present.

Most children at young ages spend much of the day putting things in their mouths. Especially toddlers, they seem to put anything and everything in their mouths that they can get their hands on. In 1998, scientists at Rutgers University discovered that pesticides sprayed in a home evaporate from floors and carpets, and then re-condense on plastic and foam objects such as pillows and plush toys. By observing how frequently a group of pre-schoolers put clean toys in their mouths, the researchers calculated that contaminated toys are likely to give young children much higher doses of poison than adults would get in the same environment.

Babies do not excrete contaminants or store them away in fat in the same ways that adults do, making the poisons more available to affect rapidly growing bodies. furthermore, because a baby’s immune system is not fully functional, a baby’s body cannot counteract toxic effects as well as an adult can. In an adult, a blood-brain barrier insulates the brain from many of the potentially harmful chemicals circulating through the body. But in a human child, that barrier isn’t fully developed until six months after birth.

A pregnant woman can also pass the toxins from common cleaners to their unborn child Many contaminants such as dioxins and PCBs have an affinity for fatty tissue. During pregnancy, women mobilize their amassed stores of body fat to provide nourishment for their growing babies; the contaminants in the fat are then passed to their children. Nursing mothers also transfer a good portion of their lifetime accumulation of chemicals to their babies.

Children exposed in the womb are at greatest risk of all. because cellular structures change so rapidly during embryonic and fetal growth, a toxic exposure at the wrong moment can permanently alter further development. According to Dr. Landrigan, the central nervous system is especially vulnerable. To function properly, the developing brain must lay down an intricate web of interconnecting neurons. Small doses of neurotoxins during critical periods of brain development can alter those crucial neural pathways – one mistake early on, and the brain may be forever changed in subtle or serious ways. Government and university scientists are currently investigating the possibility of a connection between fetal exposures to toxics and developmental disabilities such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

As a parent you SHOULD be concerned about this Cleaning your home with toxic products are literally breaking down your children’s bodies and adding onto the changes of cancer and other life threatening health concerns.

Even if you had no clue about this concern, until you just read this article, now is the time to take action you can start by only using toxin free cleaning products Get rid of any products that are not eco-friendly. if a product is eco friendly, that means it is safe to have in your home if it is safe to have in your home, it is safe to use without having to worry about the harmful effects
