Buying Guide: Musical Hardware for iPad Songsmiths

On December 15, 2011, in drum Machines, by Luke Judge

When musicians first laid eyes on the iPad, they immediately recognized its huge potential as a music-making machine. The versatility of the touchscreen quickly gave rise to a bevy of synths, drum machines, multitrack recording apps and otherworldly, touch-sensitive instruments.

And while making music on the iPad is still mostly about the apps — Animoog, Korg iElectribe, NodeBeat, GarageBand, Sunrizer, JazzMutant Lemur — the tablet becomes even more useful if you can plug other stuff into it.

At first, we only had the ability to plug in guitars and microphones to record songs. but now, ever since Apple added support for the CoreMIDI framework to iOS and introduced the Camera Connection Kit, we can plug in a variety of keyboards, drum pads and other hardware to control our apps. Instead of tapping the touchscreen to make a noise, you can play a chord, press a key or twist a knob.

Here’s our guide to this season’s latest gear for iPad musicians.

In order to use most music-making devices with an iPad, you’ve got to get one of these. Apple’s $30 device (the square-ish white adapter in the photos above and below) essentially turns the iPad’s dock connector into a USB port. The company calls it a “Camera Connection Kit” because that’s what most consumers are going to use it for. but musicians can use it for much more than holiday snaps. USB keyboards, hardware controllers, preamps, headphones, digital-to-analog converters — this little dongle is your lifeline to hundreds of audio toys.

Online Coin Photography

On December 12, 2011, in penny Coins, by Luke Judge

Problems abound in the online coin trade, from excessive buyer’s fees and opening bids and reserves to misrepresentation and shoddy shipping. however, bidders can circumvent those travails by reading terms of service and gaining numismatic knowledge.

When it comes to photography, however, bidders eager to score bargains often overlook the most fundamental component of any deal, and that is, the ability to see the product as it really is, or as close to reality as possible.

eBay has specific rules, many emanating out of lawsuits, in coin auctions, including these:

  1. Include all relevant information that you know about the item, such as origin, date of issue, and condition.
  2. Include all information about any alterations that may have been made to the item.
  3. Ensure that any replica coin (U.S. or foreign) is clearly and permanently marked with the word “COPY” as required under U.S. law.
  4. In addition to including appropriate photos, clearly state that any replica is a “reproduction,” “replica,” or “copy” in both the title and description.
  5. Treat in lot descriptions as a “raw” or uncertified coin any item not certified by NGC, PCGS, ANACS, ICG or NCS
  6. No estimate of value (even if personal opinion) or reference to a price guide may be included in the title or description if the lot is not certified by the above grading companies.
  7. Include a clear picture of the actual item being sold—don’t use only stock pictures.
  8. In addition, listings for certified coins must include an image of the item, showing the coin in its graded holder. the image needs to be clear and the grading company, grade, and certification number should easily be readable. Note: Coins minted before 1980 must show the full front and back of the holder. Coins minted in 1980 or after must show the full front of the holder.
  9. The listing includes a photo of the coin being sold. Images that are dark, out of focus, edited, or might be misleading aren’t allowed. Also, stock photos aren’t allowed.
  10. Coins that are sealed in original U.S. Mint packaging must include a photo showing the actual packaging.

To be sure, purchasing coins from eBay comes with its own set of issues, from dealing with dozens if not hundreds of sellers, some as ornery as they come, to navigating PayPal policies and surviving disputes in the Resolution Center. however, when it comes to eBay, at least adversaries know precisely and numismatically what they are trying to resolve.

Often that cannot be said about the leading auction portal, Proxibid. (For top auction houses, see rankings in Proxiblog, as these mostly provide everything that top sellers in eBay do plus better bargains.)

For more than a half year, Proxiblog has campaigned for quality control, especially in online coin photography. Only a handful of auctioneers then were providing photos of obverse and reverse, and many of those could not be expanded to detect varieties and condition. now most coin auctioneers provide visual basics. For the most part, photography continues to improve, not only because of advocacy by Proxiblog but also because Proxibid’s quality control officer understands what is at stake and works behind the scenes to rectify issues.

Below is a sampling of issues involving photography:

Here is a house that only photographs the box of a coin, but not the coin itself.

This house takes blurry pictures of coins at sunset.

This seller notes scratches on the reverse but doesn’t show the reverse.

This house even manages to muck up the photography of a PCGS coin so that the certification cannot be seen.

That said, some Proxibid auctioneers are improving their photography because they know that this is the main ingredient for return customers and higher profits. Check out this link for representative samples.

To test for adequate photography when purchasing on Proxibid or any portal or online shop selling coins, determine whether the photo would be able to capture one of the top 100 VAMs, also needed in set registries, and that is the 1887/6 Morgan dollar. Check out the photos on VAMWORLD to see the level of photography needed to capture this much-desired variety.

Also, we recommend not purchasing coins from any seller or auctioneer that provides only pictures of obverse, whose pictures do not expand and/or lack VAM-sharpness, that show only boxes or stock photos and whose lightning is inadequate or too bright.

A major pitfall on Proxibid remains photography and lighting. In the past, even with these guidelines, I have purchased doctored and misrepresented coins. several auctioneers are selling ungradable dipped coins photographed against black backgrounds with strong lighting, a technique that obscures the dipping, especially when combined with overenthusiastic lot descriptions.

That said, upon being informed, other auctioneers have vastly improved their photography.

The temptation of Proxibid is the prospect of a deal, and I’ve enjoyed many. There’s a skill to purchasing on the portal that is beyond the scope of this post. moreover, Proxibid’s state-of-the-art technology and superior customer service are the best in the business. I still buy coins from Teletrade, great Collections and eBay whose quality controls are uniform and transparent. Usually I look to these sites when I need specific coins.

Despite tens of thousands of sellers, and dozens of coin-related lawsuits, eBay has managed to standardize quality control for the vast majority of its items. In time, I believe, Proxibid will follow suit.

Buying China Stamps

On December 2, 2011, in omnibus Issues Stamps, by Luke Judge

Collecting and buying China stamps can be fun and challenging. Unlike stamp collecting in your home country, where you can count on friends and family to help you collect by saving their canceled stamps, China stamps must be purchased from other sources.

Collectible China stamps can be rare, expensive issues such as the ‘Large Dragon’ series from the mid-19th century or new stamp issues that were just released from China Post last week. almost every stamp can have an appeal to a stamp enthusiast that makes worthwhile to own.

You can buy these stamps online, through mail order catalogs, at stamp collecting shows, in a local stamp dealer shop or on auction. It requires investing time in research as well as identifying honest operators to make purchases from.

You can be purchased online easily through reputable dealers who can be checked out to assure a safe transaction. Purchasing online allows you to make your purchase with the best available information, almost always with the benefit of photos that show the actual stamps being offered. Mail order catalog companies also provide the benefit of photos and pricing to compare with competitors, but in print rather than on a website.

If you wish to buy your stamps in person, you can attend a stamp show or visit a local dealer who displays stamps in a store. Stamp shows can be hit or miss because while collecting China stamps is common in Asia, in Europe and North America it is not be widely showcased at stamp collector gatherings.

Auctions, usually reserved for selling rare stamps, are another forum for finding great pieces at low prices. One exception to the rule is stamps sold on eBay, the world’s largest auction company. not without risk, eBay is a good place to get an idea of what your China stamps may be worth amongst collectors.

Make Your Home Smell Like Chocolate

On November 20, 2011, in advent Candles & Holders, by Luke Judge

There are few things as great as the taste of chocolate. It’s sweet, delicious, and for many people, there’s never enough of it. but while it isn’t practical or healthy to spend whole days gorging on the sweet stuff, we can do the next best thing: fill the home with the delicious fragrance of chocolate. Here are a few ideas to keep you constantly enveloped in a cocoa cocoon.

Natural and Artificial Smells

Natural or artificial, store-bought or home-made, there are plenty of great air fresheners to fill your home with chocolate.

1. The best way to fill a house with a chocolaty aroma, of course, is to bake a batch of chocolate chip cookies or brownies. Baking a rich chocolate cake will also do the job. If you are baking a batch of brownies or cookies because this article is making you crave chocolate, please post photos of your culinary adventure on Hometalk.com, or tell us your best recipe. We can smell the chocolate already.

2. If you aren’t the baking sort, or want a smell that’ll last longer than an afternoon, try a chocolate-scented room spray. The Demeter Fragrance Library, makers of ridiculously specific and realistic scents, offers “Atmosphere Sprays” in chocolately Brownie, Chococat, Chocolate Chip Cookie, Chocolate Mint, Devil’s Food and Tiramisu scents.

3. Make your own chocolate air freshener by mixing a few drops of chocolate essential oil, a couple of teaspoons of alcohol and a cup of water in a spray bottle. this is an option for people who choose not to use synthetic fragrances in their homes.

4. Add a little chocolate essential oil to a container of potpourri for a chocolate-and-spice scent mix. you can make your own potpourri by mixing cinnamon sticks, cloves, pine cones, pine needles and wood chips. Tipnut suggests “fermenting” your DIY potpourri in a jar for 6 weeks before uncapping it, for optimal scent power. our experience with essential oils is that their scent dissipates quickly when exposed to air, so we recommend adding the chocolate essential oil right before you uncork your potpourri.

5. Burn a chocolate-scented candle. Natural soy candles made with non-toxic ingredients are actually pretty plentiful. We found handmade “Brownie Fudge” soy candles on Etsy (Krazy Candle Lady) and Chocolate soy wax candles from Sedona Aromatherapie. If conventional paraffin candles and synthetic fragrances don’t bother you, Yankee Candle offers jarred candles in Chocolate Truffle scent.

Chocolate-scented Plants for your Garden

1. Chocolate mint (Mentha piperita) is an easy-to-grow cultivar of Peppermint that will thrive outdoors. The leaves really do smell like a Thin Mint, and you can dry them and add them to your tea leaves for a great-tasting drink.

2. Chocolate cosmos (Cosmos atrosanguineus) isn’t edible, but this dark-hued flower is a great perennial that emits a chocolaty scent.

3. Chocolate daisy (Berlandiera lyrata) is a cousin to the common garden daisy, but this plant replaces the daisy’s floral notes with a powerful scent of sweet cocoa.

4. Chocolate vine (Akebia quinata), a native to East Asia, is a deciduous creeping vine that produces chocolate-scented flowers.

Create Your Own Heirloom With a Collage Photo Blanket

On November 17, 2011, in blankets, by Luke Judge

When you simply can’t decide which picture to use on your photo blanket a collage photo blanket is the ideal answer. If you want to create a prized family heirloom that captures memories that everyone will enjoy, a collage picture blanket is also the answer.

Your collage blanket can be made of a knitted, woven or fleece fabric, but your choice will determine the level of detail and number of photos that the blanket can reproduce is good detail.

First, narrow your choices of photos to determine which ones you would like to include in your collage, and which ones you absolutely must. next, you need to decide how large your collage blanket will be; do you want a standard sized blanket or something much larger? If you are ordering several, you may want to consider if some recipients will prefer a different size.

Fleece is by far the best and most detailed collage blanket available. This type of collage photo blanket reflects amazing detail and thus can be imprinted with more photos than other fabric choices – this is where the number of photos you choose to include becomes very important.

Your collage photo blanket will most likely arrange your pictures in columns or rows, and you may also have the option to add text such as a special message or date in the collage. you may want to include information about the special occasion depicted in the pictures of your collage, or simply your family’s surname if it is made of many different various pictures.

Creating a collage photo blanket is a wonderful way to preserve memories in a way that will become a keepsake passed down through generations in the future. of course, a collage blanket will not only make you smile, but will also become a practical gift, too.

Consider ordering a collage photo blanket for your loved ones who have a special celebration approaching, and watch their amazement and appreciation when they discover your thoughtful gift of a collage blanket
