This week in Montclair crime: Armed robbery at Long Hing Ching, burglaries at Crockett’s Fish Fry, the inner Eye, suspicious activity. from Lt. Scott Buehler:
Burglary
On 9/21/11 at approximately 9:15 AM, police responded to Crockett’s Fish Fry on Bloomfield Avenue on a report of a burglary. It is believed that the burglary occurred between 10:15 PM on the 20th and 9:00 AM on the 21st. Entry to the establishment was gained by breaking the glass front door to the restaurant. the victim reported that a metal lock box containing approximately $500 was stolen. On 9/21/11 at approximately 2:45 PM, police responded to a single-family residence on Warren Place on a report of a possible burglary in progress. Upon arrival, police spoke to the complainant, who stated that she returned home from walking her dog when the dog became agitated. the dog began barking loudly as the victim approached the front door to the residence. she entered the home and asked, “Is anyone home?” but received no reply. However, due to her dog’s response, the victim exited the house and called the police. the victim stated that as she exited the residence, she observed an individual running up a nearby driveway. Upon arrival, police located a chair underneath a kitchen window and multiple unlocked basement windows. the screen to the kitchen window had been cut and removed from the window. the victim reported that seven pairs of gold earring, with a total value of $3,500, eight pairs of silver earring, with a total value of $3,200, three gold necklaces, with a total value of $5,700, a silver necklace with three different colored stones and valued at $325, and an Indian mala bracelet, valued at $100, were stolen from the residence. the individual observed running up the nearby driveway is described as a white or Hispanic male, 5’5”-5’7”, with short dark hair and possibly having facial hair. he was last seen wearing a blue t-shirt. anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective Ray Gulbin at 973-509-4739.
Suspicious Activity
On 9/21/11 at approximately 11:50 PM, police responded to Claremont Avenue on a report of suspicious activity. the resident told police that she heard a noise outside of her apartment and informed a friend, who went outside to investigate. the friend reported that he saw a black male standing in the driveway on the east side of the house. the friend approached the male and asked who he was, but the male ran southbound in the driveway in between the houses. the friend pursued the male and began yelling at him, but the male hopped a fence to escape. the suspect is described as a tall black male with a thin build and last seen wearing a white t-shirt and gray sweat pants. anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Wil Young at 973-509-4719.
Burglary
On 9/22/11 at approximately 9:00 AM, police responded to Anjiru Hair Salon on South Fullerton Avenue on a report of a burglary. the victim reported that the store was secured on the 21st at approximately 8:00 PM. When he returned to the store on the 22nd at approximately 8:50 AM, he discovered that approximately $200 had been stolen from the cash drawer. Entry to the business appears to have been gained through a front porch window, as the track frame to the window had been damaged. Motor Vehicle Theft
On 9/22/11 at approximately 9:00 PM, police responded to High Street on a report of a stolen motor vehicle. the victim stated that he parked his Chevrolet Tahoe in a lot on the 21st and approximately 10:00 PM and discovered it missing on the 22nd at approximately 8:40 AM. On the 22nd at approximately 12:20 PM, Montclair Police was notified by the Essex county Sheriff’s Department that the vehicle had been located. There are no suspects at this time.
Arrest
On 9/22/11 at approximately noon, police were dispatched to Kings Supermarket on a report of a man who had been asked to leave the area for panhandling, but had refused. Upon arrival, police located the male, later identified as Anthony Robinson, near an entrance to the store. Robinson, 35, of Newark, was placed under arrest after police that he had an active warrant for his arrest issued by Belleville, with bail set at $400.
Theft from a Motor Vehicle
On 9/22/11 at approximately 2:00 PM, police received a report of a theft from a motor vehicle. the complainant told police that she parked her Chevy Impala in a garage on Pine Street on 8/31/11. When she returned on 9/5/11, she discovered that her vehicle had been entered. It is possible that the vehicle had been left unlocked prior to the incident. the victim reports that a black, wheeled carry case, valued at $50, was missing. Approximately 500 pieces of silver jewelry, valued at $1,500, was in the case when it was stolen. This jewelry included earrings, necklaces, anklets, rings, and bracelets. Arrest
On 9/22/11 at approximately 3:30 PM, police responded to Pathmark in the Lackawanna Plaza Mall on a report of a shoplifter. Upon arrival, police spoke to an employee who stated that he had observed a female, later identified as Charade Jenkins, attempting to conceal items from the shelves inside a shopping bag. these items included facial cleansers, body lotions, and air freshener spray, with a total value of over $65. Jenkins, 46, of Montclair, was placed under arrest and charged with shoplifting. Bail was set at $3,500. she was also found to have warrants issued by Montclair totaling $2,500.
Armed Robbery
On 9/22/11 at approximately 10:50 PM, police responded to the Long Hing Chinese Restaurant on Orange Road on a report of an armed robbery. the victim, an employee of the restaurant, reported that he was getting ready to close his restaurant when three black males approximately 25-30 years of age wearing all black and black bandanas covering their faces walked in from the rear of his store. one male pulled a gun out and pointed it to his head, while another male went towards his cash register and opened and took all the cash out. the victim added that the third individual stayed by the rear door of the store as a lookout. the victim stated that the individual that had the gun pointed at him demanding more money. When the victim replied that he had no other money, the individual hit the victim with the gun in the face. the three individuals left through the rear door of the restaurant. the victim added that the individuals took approximately $400.00 cash. he also reported that the individual with the gun was approximately 5’7″ feet tall. the gun was described as being a black revolver. anyone with further information is asked to contact Detective Terence Turner at 973-509-4724.
Burglary
On 9/23/11 at approximately 1:55 AM, police responded to The inner Eye on Bloomfield Avenue on a report of an activated alarm. an employee later responded and reported that the business had been burglarized. the victim stated that the rear door was ajar and the door’s frame had been broken. the victim reported that an undetermined amount of cash had been stolen from the business. Attempted Motor Vehicle Theft
On 9/23/11 at approximately 8:00 AM, police responded to Gates Avenue on a report of an attempted motor vehicle theft. the victim reported that she parked her vehicle, a Volkswagen Passat, in a lot on the 22nd and approximately 9:00 PM. When she returned to the vehicle on the 23rd at approximately 7:30 AM, she found that the driver’s side door lock and the ignition cylinder had been damaged. she also reported that a Garmin GPS unit, valued at $200, had been stolen from the trunk of the vehicle. Vandalism to Motor Vehicles
On 9/23/11 at approximately 8:30 AM, police responded to New Street on a report of vandalism to a motor vehicle. the victim stated that between 11:00 PM on the 22nd and 8:25 AM on the 23rd, someone had broken the front passenger’s side window to his Ford F-15 pickup truck. the vehicle had been parked in front of the victim’s residence at the time of the incident. Further investigation revealed that the driver’s side lock had been damaged and the suspect had rifled through the glove compartment. while on scene, police were approached by another resident who reported that her vehicle had been vandalized. This victim stated that her Volkswagen Passat had been damaged while parked in front of her residence. the damage occurred sometime between 6:00 PM on the 22nd and 8:45 AM on the 23rd and consisted of damage o the driver’s side lock. It does not appear that entry was gained to the vehicle. There are no suspects at this time.
