PlayStation 3 continues its climb, despite Xbox 360 pressure

(Credit:Sony)

Sony’sPlayStation 3 may be trailing theXbox 360 andWii in total sales, but the console’s steady climb is helping it gain ground.

According to Reuters, Sony Computer Entertainment head Andrew House told reporters today that the PlayStation 3 is on target to sell 15 million units during the current fiscal year that ends in March.

If the PlayStation 3 does reach 15 million units sold, it would mark the fifth-consecutive year of unit-sales growth for the console. during Sony’s 2006 fiscal year, it sold 3.5 million PlayStation 3 units worldwide. The company followed that up with 9.1 million, 10.1 million, and 13 million unit sales in the 2007, 2008, and 2009 fiscal years, respectively. The 2010 fiscal year saw PlayStation 3 sales hit 14.3 million units.

That growth stands in stark contrast to the sales Nintendo’s Wii has been posting over the last few years.

Back in January, Nintendo announced that for the last three consecutive years, it had sold at least 7 million Wii units in the U.S. However, what the company didn’t say is that in 2008, it sold 10 million Wii units in the U.S., and followed that up with more than 9 million units sold in 2009. Last year, its sales hit 7 million units.

But it’s not just the U.S. during the six-month period ended September 30, Nintendo sold 3.35 million Wii units worldwide. during the same period the previousyear, its Wii sales reached nearly 5 million units.

Meanwhile, the Xbox 360′s sales are growing. during Black Friday week alone, Microsoft had its biggest week ever, selling nearly 1 million consoles to U.S.-based customers. and over the last several months, the Xbox 360 has easily outpaced PlayStation 3 and Wii sales, cementing its position as a leader in the U.S. market.

That said, it’s important to take a full look at console sales. and on that front, Sony might actually be doing a bit better than Microsoft. so far, Sony has sold 55.5 million PlayStation 3 units worldwide. Microsoft, on the other hand, has sold 57.6 million Xbox 360s around the world, but that console launched about a year before the PlayStation 3.

Although Nintendo is probably unreachable for Sony or Microsoft–the Mario creator has sold 89 million Wiis–it seems somewhat likely that the PlayStation 3 could, at some point this year, given its strong sales, outpace the Xbox 360 in worldwide sales.

But Sony is about more than just video games. The company’s television business is in trouble, prompting some shareholders to call on management to sell it off, while other divisions are getting squeezed by tight margins. The impact of that is major: Sony says it will report a $1 billion loss this year, and Fitch Ratings has downgraded the company to BBB-, just one notch above a “junk” investment.

The Importance of Physical Fitness For Our Youth

On December 23, 2011, in nintendo Game Boy Advance, by Luke Judge

Being physically fit as a child used to be easy. When I was growing up, we had three channels on the television set (if we were lucky and the weather held), no computers, no cell phones, no video games, etc. We played games, read and at least at our house, we had a list of chores to do. All of that made us naturally fit.

Now, the whole family spends the majority of their waking hours in front of one screen or another. Computers at work and school, more computing at home, text messaging, gameboys, wii and the television all have us hooked, and we get little to know exercise.

That’s not good for any of us, but particularly not our children. It becomes very important that we teach our children why it’s necessary, but it will take more than that. We have to see to it that they get enough exercise. There are several reasons for this.

Diabetes: We associate poor diet with diabetes, but the food involved is not the whole problem. If you are overweight for any reason, your risk of this disease rises.even if you eat well.

Insomnia: There is a direct link between lack of exercise and difficulty sleeping. The stress relief may be part of it, as well as the release of endorphins. It is best to finish your workout at least four hours before bed time, as that could also cause the same problem.

Obesity: Diet is only half the battle in preventing or getting the weight down to a normal level. Getting out there and moving around is a requirement, and even the best planned diet could lead to a higher than desired weight if it’s not done.

Now that you can see the importance, here are a few things that you can do that will help you keep your kids safe and healthy:

Limits: put a limit on how much time the family spends in front of a screen. This will help in a couple of ways, and one has little to do with physical fitness.it may save your eyesight. Remember to limit all screens, including cell phones.

Participate: Join a parent/child game league. Bowling, softball, basketball, all of them provide physical activity. they will also help improve the bond you share.

Be an Example: your kids will probably follow this rule: they will do about 80% of what you do right but 100% of what you do wrong. If there are no leagues available, you still need to get out there and exercise. Join a gym, go for a walk, let your kids see you trying to stay fit and they will most likely follow your example.

Talk to the School: some schools do not require physical education after a certain grade. part of that is because high school students may need the extra class time to qualify for college. on the other hand, stopping PE often means a stop to any form of physical activity. It might be better in the long run for all grades to have PE as a requirement.

We can stop the epidemic of childhood obesity, and shrink our own midsection. It will take work on our part, but the results are well worth it.

Kirby’s Adventure Wii Review • Reviews • Eurogamer.net

On December 14, 2011, in Pewter Collectables, by Luke Judge

HAL Laboratory has shown some balls with its most famous creation, which is appropriate given that he looks like one. in recent years, the career of Masahiro Sakurai’s pink blob has taken an experimental detour, with Epic Yarn, Power Paintbrush and Mass Attack all proving the malleability of the rose-tinted hero.

So it’s a surprise in some ways to see him revert to old form. Kirby’s Return to Dream Land (as the more accurate US title would have it) is a retrograde platformer where you consume enemies to obtain their powers. His fans would argue that’s what Kirby’s best at, but this is so disappointingly generic that most will miss his more esoteric side. Here, HAL has appropriated Kirby’s Copy ability: ingesting past glories, then regurgitating them for our pleasure.

Originally planned for release on the GameCube, Kirby’s Adventure Wii is a game that exists solely to fill a hole in a release schedule. with no unique hook, it’s simply happy to retread old ground.

Most environments and enemies are recognisable from previous Kirby games, and stages follow all-too-familiar themes: forest, desert, water and – surely not! – ice worlds all feature. it will surprise precisely no one to learn that the first boss is Whispy Bleeding Woods. the motion control elements are the most token of additions, restricted to mini-game asides and the occasional bit of physical exertion where Kirby must inhale a larger object to get by, as you shake the remote to suck as much as the idea does.

You need to press the minus button to get rid of an unwanted ability, which is unnecessarily awkward. What’s wrong with B?

A threadbare plot tells the tale of a friendly (or is he?) extraterrestrial visitor, with Kirby and chums gathering the parts of his crashed spaceship so he can return home. At least it has the decency to remain unobtrusive – every cut-scene is thankfully skippable – but the half-hearted storytelling is symptomatic of the apparent lack of effort put into making the game.

At least the menagerie of enemies has been expanded a little, meaning that Kirby has more abilities to pilfer. yet the transformations are barely more than a series of different hats. some have unique abilities, but many are identical bar the cosmetics – the differences between Water, Spark and Needle Kirby in particular are negligible. a few abilities have greater range than the others, and most will likely stick with these after the novelty of changing form has worn off. You’ll need specific types to reach certain secrets and collectables, but there’s always an enemy in the vicinity with the ability you require.

There are occasional moments of inspiration. Stone Kirby sees him transform in turn into a boulder, a statue, a star block and a stone sculpture of himself, and there are some silly, throwaway abilities like the useless but amusing Sleep Kirby. Special enemies yield rewards which temporarily turn the 1 button into a win button: a gigantic sword cuts a swathe through anything in its path; a dragon flame burns through obstacles and enemies; a massive snowball smashes through giant tiki torches and sandcastles. the buzz of rumble feedback, the slight hit-pauses and crunchy sound effects really nail the appeal of destruction.

There’s a perfectly good a button, but it’s taken up by a weird crouch-cum-block move. You will never use it.

These are the most fun moments in the game, even if they achieve little bar making it even easier for a minute or two. one particularly neat touch has the sword change into different weapons for every swipe, from a curved scimitar to a meat cleaver. my five-year-old son, co-op partner for this review, thought this was the best thing since sliced Skylanders and giddily jumped and hooted with delight.

Indeed, it’s not a bad game for parents to play with their kids. You can carry them past tricky bits (though ‘tricky bits’ is relative – this is, after all, a Kirby game) and tag them to boost their energy meter if you snaffle a health-giving piece of fruit, as well as sharing the occasional invincibility power-up. Nor will little ones need to worry too much about keeping up. though a much tighter view than New Super Mario Bros. Wii’s dynamic camera means it’s easy to fall behind, any players that disappear from view will warp to where the leader is with no penalty. Judicious use of this can help less skilled players get past tougher obstacles.

Co-operative play is elegantly handled, with friends and family able to jump in and dip out at the touch and hold of a button respectively. Player one is always Kirby, but everyone else gets the choice of Meta Knight, King Dedede and Waddle Dee, each of whom has a skill analogous to one of Kirby’s as well as the ability to float, thus making platforming a doddle. But all feel slightly lacking compared to our hero, whose Copy ability ensures he gets the lion’s share of the fun.

Kirby then counter-intuitively chucks the orb in front of him, so half the time you inhale it back up as you’re trying to ingest a new enemy. Great.

This apparent imbalance is mitigated by moments where someone gets to carry an auto-firing cannon, say, or an umbrella to protect the others – though these occasions are as frequent as they are inventive, which is to say, not very. Sure, the umbrella might actually be a French horn parping out a protective rainbow, but same difference.

Fortunately, everyone can choose a Kirby of a different hue, and while lives are shared, restarts are instant unless player one buys the farm. though the difficulty is supposed to scale as the number of participants increases, it’s hard to spot the difference: one side effect of having a full complement is that every boss battle becomes ludicrously easy.

Elsewhere, there are monochrome ‘void’ levels where you have to outrun a slow-moving wave of colour. on the first level this encroaches on the left side of the screen; the next occasion sees it approach from the right. Then – surprise! – it descends from above. this is Kirby’s Adventure Wii’s idea of variety.

There’s a level where you carry a candle through a darkened interior, while another features a network of rotating cannons. Pulse-quickening stuff.

Meanwhile, collectable orbs that are about as well-hidden as Snake in rainbow camo can be used to unlock challenge rooms, which, despite the low difficulty level elsewhere, are genuinely worthy of the name. there are two further multiplayer asides, one which has you swing the remote to throw ninja stars at targets, and a basic shooting game where players compete to destroy an armoured boss. Both are fleetingly entertaining, but compared with Kirby Mass Attack’s extensive selection of mini-games, it’s a fairly anaemic offering.

In recent weeks, Nintendo has reminded us that there’s no-one finer at making games for young and old alike, with two copper-bottomed classics and, possibly, a third just around the corner. so when it releases something as wishy-washy as this, it stands out all the more.

Kirby’s Adventure Wii isn’t bad, but set next to last year’s Donkey Kong Country Returns, or even Ubisoft’s zesty Rayman Origins, this winter’s other other platformer feels very vanilla by comparison.

Nintendo Wii sells 190,000 units in Aug. U.S. data

On October 1, 2011, in monitor Cables Dvi Svga Bnc, by Luke Judge

Nintendo Co. this week said the Wii hardware sold 190,000 units at U.S. retail in Aug.

The hardware ranked two exclusive titles in the top 10 games sales, including Ubisoft Inc.’s Just Dance Summer Party and Just Dance 2 at No. 7.

Nintendo in July said the company held a Q1 net loss of $324 million. For the fiscal year ending Mar. 2012, it expects a profit of $257 million, down 82 percent from a prior forecast.

Wii sales fell to 1.56 million in the quarter, down from 3.04 million one year prior.

Nintendo in June said it will release Wii U, the successor the Wii hardware, in 2012.

The Wii U includes a multi-core CPU by IBM Corp., a Radeon-based high-definition GPU by AMD Inc., and will utilize flash storage with optional expansion through SD memory cards or an external hard drive.

The full high-definition hardware can relay 1080p resolution with HDMI or component cables. it will also support S-Video and composite cables.

The Wii U controller includes a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen that allows users to transfer gameplay to the controller screen, or use the added screen to relay menu items.

The controller includes two analog circle pads, a d-pad, touch screen, microphone, speakers, gyrophone, face buttons and two sets of triggers.

Images to the controller screen wirelessly from the Wii u. Titles can be structured to use the controller and the screen at the same time. Examples include swiping a ninja star from the controller that fires to the TV screen.

Nintendo in May began sale of the Wii Mario Kart Bundle, which includes the Wii hardware, Mario Kart Wii, and a Wii Wheel at $149.99.

In addition, Nintendo in May began sale of new Nintendo Selects titles for Wii at $19.99 each.

New Wii titles include the Wii Play: Motion with Black Wii Remote Plus SKU and Mystery Case Files: the Malgrave Incident.

Finally, it will sell The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword in Nov.

Understanding the Nintendo Wii Mii

On September 17, 2011, in nintendo Wii, by Luke Judge

With Nintendo Wii games you will find many little icons that take on a life of their own. They are known as the Mii. They are what keep the scores for the games, keep your personal settings for the Wii Fit games, and help you to achieve what you want to with your various games. you can only save what has gone on in a given Wii game though with the use of a memory card.

Some people think it is silly that Nintendo took the time to name this feature. After all there have been such icons in place since the beginning of video game history. However, with Nintendo they wanted to put things on a more personal level. the name Mii is perfect too since it deals with your individualized playing concepts.

In fact, you will find there are people out there only interested in playing the Nintendo Wii home gaming console due to the Mii concept. They love it and they don’t want to go back to playing anything that isn’t personally designed for them. They don’t want to be just another number out there playing another video game. They really enjoy being a part of the game instead of just playing it.

They love the familiarity of their Mii when they are playing the games. They also get to where they recognize those of other people who are joining in the game. This was really a smart concept that Nintendo brought to life. it has gone over well with people of all ages as they feel they are a significant part of the games they are playing on the Wii.

The fact that you can personalize your Miis for the various games is part of the fun. you can be very creative or very basic. some people have a trade mark Mii that they use on every single game. Others change it up depending on their personality or how they rate that particular game. you can learn a great deal about a person just by paying attention to their Mii on a given game.

Many people who use their Wii gaming console to connect to the internet also use their Mii as their signature in their emails. This can be very fun especially when you are communicating with those individuals who you play Wii games with all the time. They will come to recognize your Mii as you will come to recognize theirs when they send you messages.

If you are new to the concept of creating a Mii you will find all you need to do so on the Wii screens of your gaming console. One of them is called the Mii Channel and here you can do all of your personalization. it is going to take some time to get used to this new feature though. for too many years you have been given what will appear on your screen by the gaming companies.

Now you have the chance to make it what you want it to be. This is just one more way that Nintendo outshines the competition. They have gone out of their way to make as many aspects of the gaming console personalized as they can. If you aren’t personalizing your Mii though you are really missing out on some fun.

Doing My Best

On September 16, 2011, in Star Wars Collectables, by Luke Judge

What do you do if your best isn’t good enough?

It’s a question I’ve been asking myself for some time now. Years actually, as I’ve been racing around trying to create a life for myself and those I love. in my family, I’ve been trying my best to make everyone happy; keep them safe, teach good values and set my children on the right path. in work, I try to learn new skills, develop leads, showcase my clients’ talents, work hard to build their businesses while maintaining my own. and in a new relationship, I’m trying to be authentic, honest and not let the past dictate my future.

Emphasis on the trying in all those examples because I don’t know how well I’m doing in any of it. I worry that my best attempts aren’t good enough. in fact, this past week I’ve had to accept that they aren’t.

I forget permission slips and pizza money for school parties. I don’t give my kids my undivided attention as much as I should- they watch way too much television and go through too many batteries for the Wii. I haven’t finished renovation projects that started before my separation; and some days, I can’t tell what color my rug is underneath the LEGOS, football cards and Star Wars toys. I go weeks on autopilot, never being fully present in any moment with anyone because my to do list is running through my head.

And all my energy spread too thin has caused ripples of issues in my life. Feelings of failure wash over me at odd moments and it seems like depression is always lurking around the corner, waiting for one more shoe to drop. I haven’t laughed with my friends in months and my new relationship had to bear the brunt of my recent pity party. Most dramatically, my children are acting out- normal developmental growing pains mixed with the reality of the divorce, but horrendously painful for all of us.

So with this new reality.the idea that my best isn’t good enough.I’m making some changes in my behavior and outlook.

I’m going to let the little things go. The laundry can stay in the clean basket until needed; on hot summer nights, dinner can be cold cereal. The time I spend neglecting those tasks can be put towards playing football with my kids. I will leave my cell phone off so I’m not texting away, caught up in a moment that’s not in front of me. and I will remember that summer vacation only lasts a few more weeks. and soon, I will have the routine and work schedule back, but I won’t have these extended moments with my family.

I intend to continue to do my best, but now my best will be better. it will be focused, attentive and in tune with what really matters in my life. I will figure out that place between perfection and pandemonium- where things will be as they will be. and most importantly, I will cut myself some slack. Cause I know I can be my own worst enemy.

The Harry Potter Game that Never Was…Yet

On July 19, 2011, in sega Saturn, by

Jen: So Sam, If you could have your dream HP video game, what would it be like?

Sam: Harry Potter would not be in it at all!

Jen: Hahahaha uh agreed.

Sam: I want to be an Auror hunting down death eaters, potentially before Voldemort’s fall from power. It’s such a huge universe with so much going on and so much to work with, but nobody has really looked away from things that Harry is directly involved in.

Jen: So like a prequel universe?

Sam: Sure, mostly because I don’t think it would work to have somebody hunting death eaters or something similar during the actual HP timeline; they’d be stepping on Harry/ the Order of the Phoenix’s toes.

Jen: Not to mention they’d be in direct contradiction of the people running the ministry, considering it’s all corrupt and what-not. If there were a prequel game, I’d want to see the original Order, and the Marauders! James and Lupin and Sirius are so dynamic and they barely get any screen/page time!

Sam: Very true! Seeing those guys in their prime would be awesome. I’m surprised there hasn’t been more wand action in HP games, since we live in the era of motion control gaming…

Jen: Yeah, we’ve seen lightsabers but so little wand action! I guess maybe the sensor’s aren’t precise enough for different wand motions? Can that be right? I mean, there’s an app for the iPhone that you can practice spells with, but that’s a touch screen. hmmm.

Sam: I feel like the sensors shouldn’t have a problem, maybe it’s more of an issue with how you aim your spells. Whipping the wand around then attempting to shoot a spell at a moving target could prove problematic for the camera.

Jen: WHATEVER WE LIVE IN THE FUTURE!! You know what? I want a game with a complete map of Hogwarts and everything is interactive.

Sam: WII U MARAUDERS MAP

Jen: YES! You can buy an “authentic” Marauder’s map for like thirty bucks. As a very good friend once said, “Make that shit magic and then maybe. MAYBE” The Wii U…would make it magic.

Sam: Maybe the world needs a Harry Potter facebook game.

Jen: Oh that exists. It’s boring. It’s also not licensed, so it’s like “magical school game” or something.

Sam: Ew.

Jen: Ew indeed. The only Harry Potter game I actually ever enjoyed was Sorcerer’s Stone for the Gameboy Color.

Sam: That’s actually as far as my experience with them got, at least as far as ownership is concerned.

Jen: I gave it to Prisoner of Azkaban (PS2) and that was okay but not great. I think the GBC game came out before the movies were being made. In fact I’m nearly sure of it because the box art was that funny digital Harry, not Daniel Radcliffe. Plus also, I was playing it in middle school, when the movies definely weren’t out yet. Maybe that’s the problem- the other games that DO exist are too concerned with reproducing the movie and not as concerned with bringing a fictional world to life…

Sam: That’s a good point. Part of what makes Harry Potter what it is isn’t just the main story. Just like Lord of the Rings it’s a whole world and we run into tons of interesting characters and places we’d like to know better.

Jen: Which is probably why our video game wishlist is all outside of the direct canon. Have you played LEGO Harry Potter?

Sam: Sadly no, have you?

Jen: YES and it was AWESOME!

Sam: I’m a big fan of the LEGO Star Wars games so I’m not surprised. Those are extremely open ended aren’t they?

Jen: Yep. I spent more time exploring the castle than I did in story mode. You can explore Diagon Alley, too, and then go into Gringotts and unlock mini-levels.

Sam: That’s the way all Harry potter games should be!

Jen: Yeah!! Lots of exploring, and the magic makes everything sort of mutable so you get to go back as you acquire new spells and do stuff you couldn’t do before. So. Perfect Harry Potter game: Wii?

Sam: I’d go beyond that and look ahead to the Wii U since it uses the wiimote and the new tablet controller.

Jen: Yeah, and if we’re going with a prequel storyline it would REQUIRE Marauder’s map action.

Sam: It could be cumbersome having all those controllers, but keeping their actions seperate so you can put down the wiimote when you’re using the Wii U controller could keep things clean. Maybe even more realistic since maps and wands would take up so much room in your hands.

Jen: Yeah. I’m trying to think of a good title for this game, but everything I come up with sounds dirty. Voldemort’s first rise is about as far as I’ve gotten. -_-

Sam: This sounds like a job for the harry potter wiki, maybe there’s some kind of old motto or code for aurors or just a general anti-evil motto.

Jen: TO THE WIKI!

Author’s Note: At this point, Sam and Jen failed to come up with a legitimate sounding name for this game that they have already spent too much time thinking about, and got distracted by other shiny articles on the Harry Potter Wiki.

Sam: I wonder if anyone would produce a Harry Potter game based in the height of Voldemort’s power. It would be a big change—emphasis on the darker side of the series and an older target audience.

Jen: Who would you play as? (I call DEATH EATER!)

Sam: Oooooooooo, KOTOR style moral decisions!

Jen: Play as a young Lucius Malfoyyyyyy!

Sam: I pledge allegiance to the dark lord. Use unforgivable curses or stay pure. Imagine the controversial level where you slaughter hundreds of muggles.

Jen: WHY STOP AT HUNDREDS? Thousands, or gtfo.

Sam: I thought of how aiming would work! Boomblox style! Point, lock on, Wand motion!

Jen: Nice.

Sam: List ‘o names: HARRY POTTER: WIZARD’S WAY
HARRY POTTER: WORRIED WANDS
HARRY POTTER: BE A DEATH EATER

Jen: Clearly Be a Death Eater is the most poetic. I still vote Voldemort’s First Rise.

At this point, Voldemort appeared out of nowhere and recruited both Jen and Sam to join the ranks of his third rise. Their whereabouts are still unknown.

Faxanadu wanders around in this week's Nintendo Downloads

On March 11, 2011, in speed Racer Collectables, by

Today’s highlight for Wii owners is the NES side-scrolling RPG Faxanadu making its way to the Virtual Console along with a jewel-matching game.  DSi owners can look forward to two racers and a puzzler requiring some proper planning to save some penguins.

As a lone wanderer in Faxanadu, you must traverse the World Tree to destroy The Evil One that transformed a peaceful race of Dwarves into monsters. Players must carefully navigate the tree’s various hazards while gaining experience, equipping various items, and casting spells. This NES classic can be had for 500 Wii Points.

Jewel Keepers: Easter Island is a “match three” puzzle game where you must constantly clear out jewels of the same color. There are solid blocks that don’t allow the jewels to pass through so take care in where you clear out jewels and wisely use power-ups. Worth 500 Wii Points to download.

Cozy Fire is an app to simulate a fireplace. It can be set to set up logs automatically or from the player. Worth 500 Wii Points to purchase and certainly not the first WiiWare app to offer a virtual fireplace.
